Can't connect to internet

My parents have been on hols for a month, come back yesterday and they can't connect to the internet. They have broadband with freedom 2 surf and have a BT Voyager modem.
Both the power light and the DSL light on the modem are on (steady not blinking) but when they try to connect they get message saying that it can't connect to the remote computer and was unable to establish a connection.
It worked fine the day before they left so wondering what could have happened during the past month. Any ideas anyone? Could BT have done something to the phone line? They've tried connecting a phone to the socket in that room and there is a dial tone, so we're a little perplexed.

Thanks dd - that was my suggestion too, but unfortunately no joy. They've unplugged and reconnected, tried different usb port for modem etc, all to no avail.0 -
Clear Cookies / temp files and try again. And ..... check there is no (1571) call waiting. although that would normally signal 'no dial tone'?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

How would they do that? Just by dialling 1571 from a phone on that line? Don't think they subscribe to that service though.0 -
If possible could they make sure using another computer that they have the latest drivers for the equipment they are using, otherwise I would suggest reinstalling the software.Wins: Feb - Sam and Amanda DVD, Nanny Series, £50 Mother Day Goodies box0

Is that something I can do from my pc - and if so, how do I do this?0 -

Just lift the phone - and see if the dialling tone has a break in it - which signifies a call waiting (and you ring 1571 to access the message(s)). But the break is enough to convince the modem there is no dial tone.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Hi Mike,
I work in Internet Support myself. I would check in this order. I know some of it sounds obvious
a) Try and make a normal phone call. Works. Then move to b)
b) Is the tone continious when you pick up then move to c
c) Does the modem show in network connections, in control panel - if yes move to d, if not the modem is not installed (drivers or cable issue)
d) Does it say disabled if so right click and enable, Does it say Limited or no connectivity (win XP issue - restart modem to force Ip address)
e) Check in Internet Options, connections it is set to dial.

Hi
Have you phoned f2s, they can check your parents line to see if there's a fault. Good luck though, because its pretty hard to get through to them, and raising tickets is pointless, because they never seem to answer them.
I'd give their tech support a ring, be prepared for a long wait though.0
