Focus 56 plate - door switch / sensor problem?

This frosty morning the interior light stayed on and the warning message saying the driver door is open stayed on, even though it was shut. This warning message has now gone once the car warmed up.

Is this a switch or sensor problem? Where are there they located?

Seems to have only happened when frosty, as last year had a flat battery but could not work out why until now.

There seems to be a sensor/switch on the inside of the door, but its not a push switch, so could be a proximity type.

I think the switch is in the door latch. (not at the hinged end of the door where you usually find them)

Look where the latch meets the striker, and within the latch you should see the rubber covering the switch which can be pushed in and out.

Is it not still under warranty?

  • Well its freezing tonight and will see if it does the same thing tomorrow morning. It was OK this afternoon and evening. Can only think it must be linked to freezing night temps. Didnt have time to look at the latch properly. I dont have a clue if it is covered by a warranty, as I purchased it over a year ago, second hand.
  • Did the same thing this morning. Passenger open warning light stayed on.

But got another problem. Left car to defrost with heated windscreens on. Turned off engine and came back after 5 mins but would not start. Turned over but not starting. Had to jump start it. Alternator seems to be charging OK according to voltmeter.

So battery seems to be on last legs in cold weather. Car is almost 3 years old with original Ford battery. Local Ford garage say battery only has warranty for 1 year on car, but 3 years on new battery. How crazy it that?

Anyone know where to get batteries at reasonable price as Ford want £140?

I would suggest you try another Ford dealer.

I'm not certain, but there doesn't appear to be any mention here that the battery is only covered for 1 year:

Also, £140 for a new battery? That's far more than my local Ford parts counter charges retail. Or is that a supply & fit charge?

  • £140 for 80Ahr battery, supply only.

What is the correct battery spec? Been looking online and most quote a 60Ahr battery for Focus diesel. My car is 56 plate 1.8 TDCi and current battery is 80Ahr.

Will try another Ford garage about warranty.

If it came with 80Ah originally, then that's the correct spec.

  • Why is it so hard to find the right battery. I believe it must be a calcium type, otherwise a non-calcium type can cause problems. There are other makes but its unclear what type they are. Is a silver type equivalent to calcium?

As long as the battery has the correct rating and the correct Ford terminals, it'll be fine :)

Battery technology has improved massively over recent years, and calcium technology is one of those. They have some advantages (such as lower fluid loss and improved self dis-charge characteristics) but also disadvantages (such as more demanding to recharge correctly)

You pay your money, you take your choice, but if you just want the battery to supply the correct voltage and have a 80Ah capacity, all batteries so rated do that :)

Ford battery terminals are a different design to most other cars ... but are easily available from all car battery suppliers.

If you live in Lincolnshire your more than welcome to come borrow my halfords trade card to reduce the price of a battery.

Otherwise, if you live in Cheshire (Chester area) and can wait till next wednesday evening you can borrow it then.

Of course, if you have any kind of engineering qualification, you should be able to get a halfords trade card free of charge (£60 battery becomes £40 etc)
