BT Broadband and xbox 360 live

My mate who purchased an xbox 360 ordered bt broadband for £14.99 for the first three months (17.99 thereafter) and the wireless router for £25 online at this url bt broadband. They are installing it tomorrow, but a couple of days ago I noticed the bt offer of xbox live gold membership for a year if you order through www.bt.com/xboxlive
He phoned them up to ask if he could have a code, but they said no because it was a different offer and he would not get the £3 for the first three months and the wireless router would not be available for £25.
However! I have checked both links and they both clearly say that it is exactly the same package, or am I missing something? They also said he would lose money if he were to cancel and join through the xbox live link. It looks like the operator couldn't be bothered with it and was just palming him off to me, but I would like anyone elses opinion!
