A card transaction is no different to sending a cheque, it will go through when it goes through. You would not spend money that is waiting for a cheque to clear, why is it OK for a card transaction.
You either check your account or you keep a running total of what you have committed to ... it's your responsibility, not the bank, not the shop, yours.

    I dont check my account

Therein lies the crux of this problem. It is not your bank, nor Simply Be's responsibility to ensure sufficient funding in your account. It is yours and yours alone.
the money was supposidly taken there and then!

From the wording you used in your first post, this is not the case. The payment was authorised there and then. The money was not actually taken until some 4 weeks later, as you saw. Authorisation and Settlement are two entirely different processes.

This situation can be avoided by managing your money, and knowing what you've spent versus what has come out of your account. An expensive lesson that hopefully you will not repeat. :o

The last poster is quite correct. I still have dealings in the card industry and late entries are not uncommon. It entirely depends on how they became stuck in the first place. And there are so many reasons for that. The retailer could have been working offline, on a fallback process or even the batch might not have polled correctly. So many possibilities! In all if you have spent the money then it will get debited eventually. If not the that's the one in a million one!

As for individual transactions for each product that is likely to be the retailers way of doing it, it's unusual but not that rare. Cam be an expensive way to do it if the customer uses a debit card.
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!

Well there's the root of the problem. I assume if someone tells you they've paid money IN to your bank account, you'll check rather than take their word for it?

It is very easy to manage your finances.
I have a book where I keep a record of my spending (credit cards, DD, Standing orders, cash withdrawals, internet purchases etc, etc) against my monthly income.
I have books going back over 30 years and have never ever been overdrawn in that time.
You should always remember you can only spend the money once.

    Ok firstly!

I know how to manage my money!
I have NEVER in my life had a transaction that has taken 4 weeks to come out of my account!

This isnt really an issue about how I manage my money! I was asking if people had experinced this before and if it was normal but as per with forums everyone jumps on the bandwangon!

Thanks for the folks who have given helpful advice.

You clearly don't know how to manage your money otherwise, however long it took for the payment to come out of your account, you would not have gone overdrawn.

this quote from one of your previous posts reinforces that.
If im told that a payment has been taken I take that as a payment has been taken. I dont check my account as I presumed it had been they told me it had been.

If you want to manage your money effectively you must never assume anything.

gfplux has the best suggestion in his post above.

The money being taken 4 weeks after the transaction is not that unusual as has already been pointed out.

Yes - I've experienced it before. Morrisons (petrol) took around 4 weeks over last Christmas to debit 2 x transactions made a couple of days apart. In the interim their store were maintaining the more normal 48 hour debits.

It happens ......... but it's not 'usual'.

The only protection however - is to monitor your account and know what credits / debits are imminent / outstanding. That - knowing where you stand, even if something out of the ordinary is happening - is one of the major building blocks of managing your finances. Hence the responses you're getting?

I have a transaction outstanding which I did back in October. It may never come through but i have it logged on my running balance on my own software just in case. In the mean time I am earning interest on it.

the bank is not responsible for how long the retailer takes to submit their payments or for any payments that get held up in the processing for any number of reasons.
My bank are being really useless and wont hold the charges or anything!

Your bank seem to be doing more than they should to help you. They are also correct in not holding the charges as it is your fault you incurred them.
