A dry, lonely Christmas

Well I have not had alcohol in 3 weeks I think and have not even fancied it, possibly dues to 2 streaming horrible colds in that time. This year, as the past few, I will be spending Xmas alone. Usually Ihave survived on pizza washed down with a bottle of champers or 2, then an early night thanking God its over for a year.

How can I make it a little more bearable this year?

  • Hi,

well done on the alcohol free-ness. I have seen how hard it is for people around me. And especially this time of year.

I don't really have anything constructive to say but just wanted to wish you well. I am not going to be completely alone but just me and my autistic son as he cannot take the usual excitement that christmas brings and i will keep it calm. I too am not sure how to get through it without being miserable!

    Hi skint,

Do you have any family or friends ... even a great auntie marge?

Could you offer to help out at a homeless shelter / church for the day?

How about pre-planning some TV, a walk etc.?

Do you have a local animal sanctuary that would welcome a volunteer?

Totally well done on the no booze!!
  • Gosh, that must be hard.
  • Hard to say without knowing you and, of course, we're all different.
If I was on my own I think I'd start off by going to midnight mass.
Then make myself a full fry up for breakfast and lounge around in something comfy all day with a selection of my favourite DVD's (Sex and the City for escapism!) some chocolates and loads of caffeine free diet coke so I wouldn't be wired.
For tea I'd have something simple like scrambled eggs and smoked salmon with some fresh fruit for afters.
A bath before bed then a good book and the radio on low.
I'd try to look on it as a treat rather than something to be endured.
Easier said than done I know....
  • Congratulations on remaining sober for 3 weeks.

If you have no family/friends you can visit, then I think the idea of helping out at a homeless shelter or something similar is a good one. It will break the day up for you and provide a distraction :)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Volutnteering? I've done this a couple of times and its something I think everyne should try once. DH and I thought about doing something this year too, but we're restricted by having animals to feed, and no where really close enough needing volunteers that we can get to and back between feeds ...if we didn't thats what I'd do this year.

There is also used to be a charitable scheme where you could invite an elderly person with no family to spend christmas with you...

If nothing else appeals having some lovely food, some great books...would be a good start...a delicious duvet day, with fresh sheets, and a scented bath, perhaps some new nightwear/lounge wear....
  • I think I will stay home, pretend its a normal day, and hopefully catch up on some rest. Boring maybe, but what 'i fancy.

Hello, well done for not drinking! If you are not keen to help out with a charity on xmas day then why not make it a fabulous pampering day. Eat all the food you love, watch your favourite movies and do anything else you enjoy. I spent one xmas alone and I made it a day to remember, each day is what you make it.

Oh and I am always on here on xmas day!
