Amazon Sent DVD Player In Manufacturer's Box Spoiled Mum's Suprise

Just venting  I recently ordered a top quality DVD player for mum for Christmas as she'd mentioned a few months back that she wanted to get one "eventually" for her bedroom. I got home today and was puzzled when she was fully aware of the so-called "surprise", telling me "you didn't have to do that!". It turns out that the box had arrived as you'd find in a shop, no outer box or bag, just the manufacturer's box (complete with an image of the hardware, name and spec) with an address sticker and barcode on the front. Gutted. Now I have never ordered a DVD player from Amazon before and maybe they're saving on materials, but the hundreds of items I have bought have all come with an outer bag or box (shoes, clothes, DVDs, Hi-Fi System, camera, etc etc) and at this time of year they should be more aware. I was really looking forward to seeing the excitement on my mum's face on Christmas morning as she really never would have expected it.
Oh well.
Oh well.

Hi,
You could have asked them to wrap it ... if they had sent it in another box, then people would be moaning about the packaging..

I honestly didn't think gift wrapping was needed as I assumed they wouldn't freely flaunt the contents of something like that, had I known they were going to just send it how they did I definitely would have had it gift wrapped despite the extra charge!0

I had this happen with one of my kids presents when I posted about it:

I was told to be grateful that I could buy presents for my kids!xxx Nikki xxx0 -
It is a little much to expect that Amazon or any other company would put a perfectly good cardboard shipping box INSIDE another box to ship to customers.....
I always have gifts delivered to an alternate address if I want to be 100% certain of secrecy.0 -

Aye, anything over a certain size tends to get shipped in it's originally shippig packaging these days with many retailers.
I've noticed it with Argos, Play, multiple computer retailers etc.
I think it's partly due to the "ecological" reasons, partly due to cost (suitable size boxes can cost a reasonable amount even wholesale), partly due to the practicalities of having suitable "outers" for everything*, and partly because there often isn't any practical reason to ship in additional packaging (the manufacturers have usually spent a small fortune making sure retail packaging for expensive items will withstand couriers/transport).
It's a minor annoyance, but one that I suspect won't go away as it is pretty much standard these days.
If in doubt try and get it giftwrapped where possible, or shipped to an alternate address
*To be able to do it with even half the stuff Amazon ship that is over a fairly small size would require them to have dozens of different boxes, and masses of filling materials (a couple of places I order from still seem to love shipping something the size of a paperback in a box big enough for a computer - largely because that seems to be their only box size other than 6 foot by 6 inches).

I dont dispute what Op said but I have bought 3 dvd players in recent times and a humax pvr last week and is always been in a outer box with manufacturers box on inside, so I am surprised this has happened0

Some manufacturers send out items in outer boxes. I hate having to unbox the B&W zeppelins just to get to their retail box at work. Perhaps some of the items you've ordered come multi-boxed already?0 -
Clearly I'm of the minority but I didn't expect it to just arrive in the manufacturer's box. Also because when I tried to remove the address label and barcode etc, they caused huge tears on the box which obv doesn't look very good for the person opening it...I just thought they'd think about things like that over Christmas. I'm not asking for an outer BOX specifically, even a bag would have been fine. Not to worry anyway what's done is done!0
