How much is RAM

My computer only has 512mb of Ram, although the hard drive is 160gb. It is really slow when you have alot of stuff on the go and I want to buy some memory. My local computer shop reckons about £100ish for an additional 2gb of RAM, but that seems expensive to me. Can anyone give me any idea how much I should be looking to pay and/or recommend anywhere to get it?

the price depends on the type of ram installed (the crucial scanner should tell you).

for example back in Feb i bought 4GB ram for a new build for about £30, the same set is now £75 :eek:

that is a bit of a rip off i think. I bought 4gb of next generation (ddr3) ram for £45, but it depends on the type you need, which crucial will say. The crucial scanner gives a fair average price.

It really depends what type of RAM it is. Some of the older type can be quite expensive. Also, it's really important that you buy the right type, so it works properly. The Crucial site linked above guarantees that the RAM you buy from them will work with your pc, particulalry if you download their checker. You may save a few pounds buying it on Ebay, but as I say, make sure it will work. If the price you have quoted is about right, you could think of replacing the motherboard. I've just bought a new motherboard, processpr AND 2gb of RAM for £100 to replace one that was about 8 years old, as upgrading the RAM would have been about £75 anyway. PC now gone from chugging to working really well. Now works a treat. They're not difficult to fit, as long as you follow the instructions. Generally speaking the older the computer the more expensive the RAM is, at least in my experience. I would use crucial memory scanner to find out which type of RAM you need and then use a shop bot to possibly find it cheaper elsewhere. I find play.com and ebuyer good for buying RAM.

Getting extra RAM from your local computer shop and/or asking them to install it is the more expensive route.

I have very little computer knowledge and am not really very good with my hands but found installing extra RAM myself to be surprisingly easy.

Crucial has a memory scanner which will recommend suitable RAM for you. So does Orca Logic. Orca is even cheaper and also reliable.

In You Tube you will find many VDOs showing you how to install RAM. If you are lucky there will even be a VDO for your specific make/model of computer.

As others have said, Crucial is the way to go. If its a laptop built in the last 4 years it'll be on DDR2 which is around £40 for 2GB. You can change it yourself - its really easy and there's plenty of guides on Youtube. It is impossible to fit it in the wrong way round.

Memory seems to have doubled in price over the last few months.

I bought a Samsung NC10 in the summer, and at the time, 2GB of memory for it was around £20. Now the same memory seems to be around £40.

Why did I not buy it then :mad: ???

Your computer probably using DDR1 RAM as by looking at the computer specs, old RAM tends to get more expensive as they move by generations since they stop manufacturing them.

2GB of DDR1 RAM will cost you around £50-£60. By that I mean two sticks of 1GB RAM.

Also @gaming_guy, DDR3 RAM is actually pretty expensive but really depends on if you're getting high quality RAM or not. I purchased 4GB of Corsair DDR3 RAM which cost me £80.

Also as jjscotman said, installing new RAM is a matter of taking the old RAM out of the motherboard and sticking the new ones in, it's like swapping batteries in a TV remote. The local computer shop is probably going to charge you £20+ for this.

Lastly, I get all my components from eBuyer, Dabs, Scan or in a last case scenario, eBay.

I would doubt if your PC could hold an additional 2GB of RAM. This would more likely be 2 sticks of 1GB and your PC probably only has 2 slots, so the old 512MB would be ditched.
£100 is really a rip off, is it PC World? If your PC is pretty old then just Ebay it £20-£30 max, use the crucial memory guide to make sure you know what your ordering. Fitting RAM is an absolute doddle. Do you remember the old kids toy where you had to put the square peg in the square hole?
