Ooh, personally I bought a Laptop ~ £1200 and a fancy pants digital SLR Camera ~£800. I had the money at the time, but they were extravagent. The worst thing as a couple was my husband's gym membership, he didn't use it for two years at £31 a month. It's a difficult thing to cancel because he felt he ought to use it. Gone now thoughI believe the struggle for financial freedom is unfair

Great thread!
I think the most ridiculous 'purchase' (if you can call it that) was either a laptop, that I didn't need, on store credit (about 30% apr!!) which I sold on ebay a month later for half of what it was worth!
Or my car, went out and signed a HP agreement in the spur of the moment for a brand new 206 - cost me £8k. I did need a new car but I could've got one 12months old for half of that! Was debt free... then went travelling!0 -
When I was 25 I bought 2 sofas which I knew were too big for my little house when I bought them. But I liked the colour and thought I could make them fit. The turned up, there was no way the 3 seater was getting through the front door, never mind in the living room. The 2 seater was edged in after an hour of my house being destroyed (doors off, stair rail off) so the 3 seater went back and I ordered another 2 seater to replace it (my head is in my hands admiting this)
8 weeks later the other 2 seater arrived the wrong shade of yellow (yes it was a yellow suite, doesn't this story just get better and better) So I called the company. They said that it was usual to get a different shade because they had to make out of different batches of cloth. But I should remove the covers and take them to a launderette and wash them together so they blend. So I did that, only they failed to tell me not to put the covers on a hot wash nor to put them in the dryer on full heat.
I came home with 2 sets of matching very patchy covers that would struggle to fit a foot stool in a dolls house. I had these damned sofas for 3 years covered in throws, looking like something that a student had slung out. And they cost me £3,000.:A

oh my goodness toto! That is a nightmare!
I ordered a 7ft long pink sofa for my flat (on credit of course!), the day it was due to arrive I was away visiting friends so my mum waited in for it. I got an irate phone call from her as I didn't tell her that it was so big, it did fit though (well, once they took the window out...) Still love the sofa though and have the cash sitting in my savings to pay off the credit when the 0% runs out (thanks to this site).Saving for an early retirement!0 -
LOL
This is great!
I remember a few years ago having a real bright idea that I was short of cash (not genuinely short just spending my money stupidly) and so decided to pay the last 4 months car insurance onto my credit card - no 0% apr or anything!
Then proceeded to only pay the minimum repayment for months and months, maybe even a couple of years before I decided I would be best off with a managed loan.
Am only just paying off that insurance now!!
I'm sure there is others, but will need to go through statements and report back!Proud DFW Nerd #62

PROUD TO BE DEALING WITH MY DEBTS0 -
Two very large pieces of fitness equipment, rarely used - but make good clothes horses.
A skip load of cosmetics and beauty products, many never used, some given as gifts, most now sold on ebay 'post lightbulb'.
Lots and lots and lots of clothes and shoes.
Gym membership - never went, now expired. (did this twice!)
Holidays.
mobile phones.
Bought a house and ended up selling it 10 years later for £500 less than I paid for it. (now it's worth at least 3 times the original price)

I have admitted this one before on here but it still serves as a reminder to me not to be so stupid. I bought a personalised reg for my car but it is a company car and they will not let me put it on - cost £880.00  it was slapped onto a credit card paying min payments for 6 months but since coming on here it is on a 0% card and is up for sale:cool: Official DFW Nerd Club Member #37 Debt free Feb 07 :cool:0
