I'd always live and retire in a town so i'd budget for a bike/public transport and minimal car use. Don't forget it has to be electric from 2030

That’s not correct, existing cars are still fine to use after that date.

We have a Nissan Figaro as a fun car....very tempting to do this, but your budget needs to be £10-20k.....which will likely stop us!!
    Plan for tomorrow, enjoy today!

Oh yes, I've seen those around once or twice round where I am. Cute car. I have a Fiat Coupe (year 2000)...I must have a thing about round rear lights!

Electric VW Transporter - without the extra weight that our conversion to a camper has added - has a range of 82 miles. Chocolate and Fireguard are words that spring to mind!
That does sound pretty pointless, oh dear! Hopefully, batteries will improve, and charging infrastructure will progress. However, it might take a completely different technology like hydrogen..."Tesla Hindenberg" anyone?

The size of batteries needed for commercial vehicles is very difficult, with hydrogen fuel cells being the main competitor. It’s coming, for instance:

I’m interested, because I like a van to carry bikes. I hate them being outside on the roof in poor weather and at stops for food / naps. Range is also a huge issue, as we tow a caravan. As is often the case, cost will be the deciding factor.

If something like a Nissan Leaf could tow I'd probably have one now or get one soon.  Not for a caravan, just a trailer.  As it is, the choice is limited to huge SuVs or minivans.  So I'll be sticking to petrol for the time being.  Shame really.

There are plug in hybrids (outlander, eniro) that can tow.  If your use pattern is mostly short local trips you could do all of these on electric and then use petrol for the longer tow trips.
    I think....
