I've been dying to get an iPhone for ages. I have done quite a bit of research on the matter of phone as my current Nokia is dying a grim death. All the reasonable alternatives to the iPhone are as (if not more) expensive so no point at looking at those really.

Are there any decent alternatives to the iPhone. I want to text, talk, take pictures, send email, browse the net occassionally and have a bit of gadgetry-pokery on there.

The iPhone is my favourite contender, but apart from that can anyone suggest a very good phone with the features outlined above. I would be buying it on pay as you go, and ideally would rather spend £200 that £440 on the iphone!

Thanks in advance

I had the same dilema only this week and in the end I opted for the HTC Hero with Orange. It uses the Android software and has it's own app store. Similar functionality to the iPhone (not the same amount of apps however the list is growing) at a much better rate.

I picked the handset up free on a £30 month contract so would recommend taking a look at it.

Thanks wicky but they are also £340 on PAYG. I can't get a new contract as I want to keep this one. Looks like a good phone though, reviews are fab!

    Any other thoughts peeps?

I would say if your looking for something similar to the iphone but for sub £200 your best bet would be an android phone and the T-Mobile pulse would be the perfect option. As a reviewer for a technology blog and a former iphone owner I was blown away by the phone and the price. At the moment one can be had for around £130 direct from T-Mobile and if you need it unlocking then there is an online unlocking agent doing the service for £15.

Its about the same size as the iphone with the same screen size and very easy to use.

The Sony phone looks great, just going to have a look at the other one...

I am particularly interested in the internet, can you get e-mails whilst out and about or do you have to pick up wi-fi signal with the sony?

I am so confused by GPRS, WAP, WI-FI and web! Whats a smartphone? How is this sony not a smartphone?

Sorry for all the Q's - you wouldn't think I was actually very competent with computers would you haha! I just lag behind in the mobile stakes as I'd never had a sim card that supported the internet until about 2months ago -its a total revolution! :D

  • Yes I've got the t mobile pulse and am very happy with it. Doesn't have the sleek beauty of the iphone but does everything I want it to, and seems pretty robust design.
