    Unless you were using a spare channel on your TV for the VCR output then no your dont need the aerial.
    You should have your scarts connected, VHS machine TV out to DVD recorder AV in, DVD recorder TV out to TV.
    Whats the make and model of your DVD recorder.
    That gum you like is coming back in style.

    It's a Panasonic DMR E55.

    OK on the back of the DVD recorder are two Scarts, on labelled TV and one labeled Ext.
    Connect the DVD TV scart recorder to the TV set it to play a DVD and make sure you are getting a picture by selecting the appropriate AV input on the TV
    Connect the VHS machine TV scart to the Ext input Scart on the DVD recorder, stick a video in and set it to play.
    Use the input select on the DVD recorder to select the Ext scart, probably AV2.
    All should now work.
    That gum you like is coming back in style.

    I've done it! many thanks. It was your clear instructions as to which lead went in which socket that did the trick. Didn't need to unplug the sky either.
