M1 or M40? Brum to Essex

I live in South Brum. I need to get to Loughton in Essex (near Debden tube). Would you: a) Go down the M1 to ensure you are on the M25 for the minimum amount of time, but risking the M1 congestion. b) Go down the M40 avoiding all M1 congestion but then having longer on the M25 at the other end? All opinons welcome - anyone…

If you want the scenic route, M1 to J13, cross country via Ampthil, Baldock, etc to Stansted Airport, then down M11

A14, M11 isn't too bad either (but is a bit longer) as long as you don't get caught behind two lorries struggling to pass one another for miles on end. Watch out for the speed cameras too if you go this route.
