M1 or M40? Brum to Essex

I live in South Brum. I need to get to Loughton in Essex (near Debden tube).
Would you:
a) Go down the M1 to ensure you are on the M25 for the minimum amount of time, but risking the M1 congestion.
b) Go down the M40 avoiding all M1 congestion but then having longer on the M25 at the other end?
All opinons welcome - anyone who does a similar journey regualry would be champion....

Neither. Go down the A1. Much nicer road to drive, much quieter.0

Yup, A14 to Peterborough and then A1 to Loughton.
Just don't do the A14 during 8-10 am or 3-6pm on a weekday :eek:0 -
went that way ourselves recently - took the M40 M25 option. Wasn't too bad at all - the M25 bit only took 35 mins in clear traffic.0

There are major roadworks on the M25 from the M40 round to the north where it is being widened at the moment, and are best avoided during busy periods. The "best" route would be entirely dependant on the time of day - but I would go with the A14/A1 option probably.0

I used to travel this route a lot and I always went down the A14, joined the M11 at Cambridge to the Loughton exit.

You haven't said what day or time?0

did not think you could get off the M11 at Loughton when you are Southbound.
You may have to join the M25 and get off at Waltham Abbey0 -
M6, A14, M11. Then depending on where you need to be in Essex, you can get off Junction 8 M11 (Stanstead Airport) and cut across if its to the north of the county.0

I travel to Sheffield area on a regular basis from Essex for swimming competition and def this is the route to go, much nicer road than the M1 alot quieter (although rather surprised recently to see an Adult shop at the side of the road it looked like it used to be a little chef or restaurant, my 18yr old and I found it really amusing, just out of the blue!!!!;)) and as Erics mum said join the A14 takes you straight into the M11 and then loughton is the last turn of before the A406.I used to travel this route a lot and I always went down the A14, joined the M11 at Cambridge to the Loughton exit.Fibro-Warrior0 -
