I think the BBC HD channel looks worse than it used to, dont know if they have done something to it or my eyesight has got worse

The BBC have dropped the bitrate on their HD channel.

There has been lots of talk about this over on Digital Spy.

Dunno if its related, but BBC have recently changed the way the channel is transmitted, and it means everyone who has an ATI 2000 series or above and trying to watch BBC HD in windows media center will find it impossible due to picture break up, and need to disable HD decoding to be able to watch it. I'm not sure of the technical details behind it, but perhaps they now use more compression?

Edit - phantom beat me to it, but confirms what I thought.

You can see which programmes Sky broadcasts in HD by highlighting them in the new HD EPG. Interestingly when browsing through HD channels' listings it shows that not all programmes on the HD channels are broadcast in HD.

    From http://www.joinskyhd.co.uk/information/features/new-hd-epg/#hdcontent

The New HD EPG also gives you the option to highlight HD content on the EPG in an orange colour to make it a lot easier to find something to watch in high definition.

With this feature enabled, you no longer need to view information about each programme to find out if it is being broadcast in high definition, which is especially useful on the simulcast HD channels where not everything is broadcast in HD.

If you prefer to watch TV in high definition, this is a good feature to have enabled.

To enable this feature, press "Services", then "Select", then scroll to "Customise" (or Press 8), then press "Select" and change "Mini TV Mode" to "ON".

The fact that sky charge extra for upscaled SD content and have the nerve to call it HD is disgusting to me
Selling upscaled SD as HD is arguably more honest than selling the carp in Murdoch's rags as news.

Thanks everyone. That has cleared alot of questions i had. I think i will have Hd set up in the main room and try both tv's to see which one is better. What channel would you recommend we try this on?
Someone has suggested BBC HD but also heard this channel isn't as good as it was or perhaps Sky Sports HD? I will make sure the program is broadcast in HD before hand. I like the idea of what Toxteth-Ogrady has highlighted which i wasn't aware sky did, but makes it a lot easier to source HD programs.
    Thanks again

Sky one's own programs like Gladiators are absolutely fantastic quality wise, thats about the best content on Sky HD IMO

Well we have had HD fitted today, but we do not have this new HD EPG?! Does anyone know why this is? Basically ours looks the same as it did on sky+.Forgot to add we have tried to go to 'Services' etc but there is no where to customise is.
