I identify with the op. I have had a licence for over 10 years but have NEVER driven on a motorway - and only twice on dual carriageway (with my husband next to me having just had a vasectomy and could'nt physically drive as I was bringing him back from the hospital!) and I HATED IT. I deal with a lot of Personal Injury claims, mainly caused by Road Traffic Accidents and after 12 years it has so put me off driving. I drive locally but if I am suddenly asked to drive somewhere a little out of the norm I immediately have to rush to the loo - if you know what I mean.
I know I am a good driver - its the other !!!!!! on the road that worry me and I have seen plenty of photographs over the years which would put you off driving for life - caused by some idiot taking a chance, misjuding speeds, showing off etc. I sympathise with you.0 -
i thought i'd fill you all in on my recent driving developments! i appear to have almost got over the driving phobia i had! i have been driving now for the last 3 mths and things are a lot different now i have even been in it alone and with my children! my parking is not great and lets me down as i have to think if i can park before i head somewhere so must overcome this and my next challenge is night driving which i tried the other night for first time in years! i just want to say that if i can get back in anyone can so good luck!;)0

i wasnt a member in06 so have never read that far back, anyway im going to book a lesson with a driving instrictor and have another go at motorway driving. ive only been driving 20 years and i sh--t meself on motorways becasuse of having to overtake lorries and them driving up your backside as well. it has given me encouragement to read this old thread.
ps i hate lorries on the motorway and my oh is a lorry driver lol.0 -

Now for my 2p's worth . . . I dont think you should even attempt to drive on a motorway without supervision if you are even slightly unhappy with taking the journey. Hesitant , nervous drivers cause accidents.
A few months ago I witnessed a three car pile up when a driver swerved. Thankfully all the people involved were fine but I'm sure they wanted to kill the first driver when she revealed that she always got panic attacks when she drove and she saw a shadow had a panic attack and swerved causing the accident.
I feel I must agree with this poster.
I learned to drive 40 years ago, taught by my Dad. His words to me on every leasson were "never forget, you're in charge of a machine that's every bit as lethal as a loaded gun".
I taught all 3 of my children to drive using those same words every time we got in the car.
The thought of a loaded gun in the hands of someone who is jumpy with nerves frightens the **** out of me!I let my mind wander and it never came back!0
