my parents wanted to go and see my sister's newborn son in italy 3 years ago. Despite reasurances, faxes, and complying to all the visa procedures, the italian consulate in tirana, albania firstly refused them the visa with no reason, then after my sister apealing, they offered to give a 3 day visa for only one parent!- Reason- they may stay in italy forever, so leave 1 in albania, and the other one goe in italy, sees the nephew then comes back!!!!

I applied for my parents next day to come in london for 1 week- same day 6 month visa, treated like humans at the british consualte, and my surprised parents didnt even want to go to the british consulate, just in case they get mistreated like in to the italian one.
Of all embassies in albania, the british one seems to stay stainless from corruption and funny stories despite many ambasador changes ! and in a country like albania, where corruption is in a big swing- staying clean, i would have been proud to be britissh!
People may say here police are useless and this and that, but i have seen police in greece, spain , italy, egypt etc being even more brutal than in a 70ies comunist state.
You d get stoped by the trafic police here, checked and if ok , being told '' have safe journey!''
likely to get something else , elsewhere instead of a wish or a advice ;)

I would have wished though, the state becomes a bit more harsh against lazy ones, and ask more from the foreign nationals to addapt to the british way of life, instead of bending to the requet for free translators in any language, etc
Country with the best principles i know

    then fish and chips.

I'm afraid the New Zealanders have us licked for fish and chips- or did some years ago when last I was there. They do it so much better: always perfect chips..often twice fried for perfect fluffy insides and crisp outsides, less greasy batter and super fresh fish..

If you like your "chips" twice fried, just go to any branch of McDonald's, BK, local take-away etc.... :rotfl:
