Be aware though that some hotels pre-auth the entire stay, plus a few hundred quid for minibar/phonecalls so if you're checking into a big chain for a reasonably long stay, be prepared that they may pre-auth a grand or so!
Fortunately I'd pre-paid for my room (it was one of the Hoxton £1 rooms!) and was only staying for one night so they only pre-authed £15 on mine (which dropped off after a week or so anyway).

I used mine a few years ago to book a hotel in Ireland - worked fine
Had a fab time when I got there and the exchange rate wasn't that bad either, better than on my Abbey cash card I had at the timeTotal Weight Loss - 28lb and countingAD 17/11/20100
