Hi,
I have just finished a two storey extension and have paid the Electrician (subcontracted through my builder) £1518.

In addition to this we requested so extra work as follows:-

1) 1 new arial point (there is one existing aerial point in the room adjacent)
2) 4 additional ceiling lights in new extension (we provided the lights)
3) extend bedroom and stair switch (we already had a switch on the landing and in the hallway but he has modified it so that the additional light in the new extension corridor could be operated by the same switch).
4) 2 extra sockets

Lastly we had a new central heating system installed through the builder's plumbers at an additional cost of £2170, we had already paid for installing a new boiler but opted for paying for a new Valliant system . This I assumed covered everything for the new system however the electrician has charged for
fitting heating controls for which he was here for half a day !
Neither the plumber, builder or electrician discussed or mentioned the cost of this additional work with us

The grand total for Sparkys extra work is £1260!

I have no idea how this figure has been arrived at as he hasn't itemised the bill he has just sent it through the builders listing the additional work he has done.
It would be really helpful if anyone know an average price for fitting aerial points, lights, sockets and particularly installing heating system controls.

Thanks in advance

  • My electricians rates for extensions are usually £40 per double socket, £60 light and switch, £40 spotlights, £40 aerial points, £80 extractor fan, you could work it out on them rates. Your builder will have put something on it for himself. I have started doing the wiring and just paying the electrician to check it, its far cheaper.

    Hi everyone,

This is my first post and I could really use some guidance from anyone in the trade or people who have had work done on their house by an electrician.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the guide price!
  • Have you thought that maybe the Electrician thought he had finished as per the origional plans/requirments,Then somebody changed certain things,Causing the Electrician more work that he could of carried out alot easier while he was doing the origional work to your or your buildes spec/plans,It always costs more to rectify/change/add to after an Installation,You maybe should have got it right to start with. I would not comment on the price though!! Might just be a costly mistake made by someone. Or am i on the wrong track?
OH THE JOYS OF BEING SELF-EMPLOYED!! Can Travel,Will Work For Free!
  • Just ask the electrician to itemise his extra charges?

Thanks to everyone for their replies. To sparky 883. All the work that was additional to the initial quote was planned for and he did those as he was doing the wiring etc for all the other work but obviously we do need to pay him for the extra work. Are you an electrician?

Hi SPARKY 883 are you part p registered? If so I could do with advice about how much it should cost to fit central heating system controls. All the work that was undertaken including additional work was done at the same time; I would certainly expect to pay for extra work but I can't quite fathom why I have been charged the final figure. I am suspicious because the bill was not discussed, it hasn't been itemised and I know he was here for half a day doing the heating controls. I have been able to get rough guide prices for lights, aerials, sockets so I know how much I should be charged for them. I wonder if you could tell me the rough guide price for heating controls all the material were supplied by the plumber. It is for S plan electrical work for an unvented cylinder and a system boiler (all in the garage, the electrical box is also in the garage and for fitting a thermostat and timer in the house.

    Thanks

Thanks for those figures they have come in very handy, I have requested an itemised bill for the additional work done so that I can give him an opportunity to justify the total figure. Do you know how much it costs (labour only) to fit central heating controls all material have been supplied by the plumber? The electrician was here 1/2 a day doing the S plan electrical work in relation to an unvented cylinder and system boiler all of which are in the garage. The electrical box is also in the garage.
The other item he fitted was the thermostat and timer don't know how long he took for that but again it is labour costs alone that I need to pay for.
    Thanks again
  • Mine charged me £200 a day for the last 2 jobs I gave hi he wont be doing many more once I have found one nearer £150.
    I would work on £200.
Working on items you have had fitted what does it amount to?
