DVD Ripping

I currently use DVD Decrypter to copy my dvd's onto my pc, these are stored as video_ts files.
When I stream these to my ps3 they show up as all individual files and its difficult to know what is there as they pretty much have all similar file names.

Ive tried using handbrake to encode them for the ps3 which does this to mp4, but this is taking in excess of 4 hours per dvd to do and then it wont play:confused:

I tried the avi output setting but this wont play either:confused: both of these show on my pc as a winamp file which wont play on winamp either.

Is there a dvd ripping prog that creates an avi or mp4 file from dvd which will work with my ps3 and don't take all day to do it?

I have also tried bitripper which took 5 hours and wouldnt play and have even paid for magicdvdripper which also wont work!!

Please help if you can, and yes before anyone asks they are all my own dvd's that I'm making copies of:D

  • Badaboom is good if you have a current Nvidia Graphics card and very fast for re-encoding purposes.

If you are ripping from files on your HDD, there was no need to purchase Magic DVD Ripper. MediaCoder PSP Edition does this for free. Download link here.

Magic DVD Ripper's forte is for ripping directly from DVD to the format of your choice, which in your case is MP4. Why didn't you test this before purchase?

Did you follow the instructions after creating the file? Q: How to transfer .mp4 file to your PSP?
A: Please connect your PSP to your computer. And then copy the .mp4 file and the .thm file to the folder '\MP_ROOT\100MNV01' on your PSP.
Please note: If you use MPEG4 video codec, you will get a file named as M4V*****.mp4 (* is a digital), and it must be transfered to the folder "\MP_ROOT\100MNV01". If you use H.264 video codec, you will get a file named as MAQ*****.mp4, and it must be put under the "\MP_ROOT\100ANV01" folder. If that folder doesn't exist, please create it first.

Of course the products work, it is more linkly that you are doing something wrong. Hopefully MediaCoder PSP Edition will take the work out of it for you.
  • Thanks both of you for your suggestions both I have tried and both I cant work out:confused:
Why cant this be as simple as ripping a cd?

I've been on this all afternoon and have only managed to rip as a video_ts file but still cant convert it, so I'm retiring and giving up as this is above my head and is too complicated for me now and my brain hurts! lol

It is (nearly) as simple.... Use Magic DVD Ripper to rip directly from DVD to MP4 and then follow the instructions above to place the file on to your PSP.

Before you start ripping this and ripping that....find a sample MP4 file and learn how to transfer it to your PSP. There are instructions in my post.

I'm not transferring to psp though:D

Im ripping dvd's to my pc to either store there or on my NAS box to then stream to my ps3. I will leave things as they are for now as to rip them does not take too long. I wanted to convert them to a different file type as the way the video_ts file is displayed its hard to tell whats what, compared to divx (avi) files which are 1 file instead of the loads you get with video_ts;)

Thanks again Donnie for your help:T

The DVD videos are MPEG2 video's. They don't need any further re-encoding to play them on your PS3 it will play them natively.

In DVD Decryptor do this to split the videos individually: select Tools > Settings > File mode > File splitting : by VOB ID.

This will split the videos into separate videos (they're all .VOB files, delete the .IFO's and .BUP's.)

These will all play in your PS3.

(If you want to extract the raw MPEG2 video from the .VOB's then download TMPGenc free version and select de-multiplex > multiplex from the MPEG Tools section but this is not necessary for playback.)
Blessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.

Do it as you are at the moment with DVD Decrypter to create the video_ts files.
Then use DVDshrink to create an ISO image from them.
