Recycle for cash.

  • Metals prices can be found on the letsrecycle website. It will not let me post a link as I am new!! Prices paid at the scrap yards vary from yard to yard but are normally around 10% less than quoted on that site.

It's only worth taking the drums out of the washing machines if they are stainless steel (DO NOT stick to magnet) otherwise leave them in.

Sorry but what are white goods? They seem to be mentioned a lot in this thread, but the term makes no sense

White goods is a term used to describe appliances like washing machines, fridges, freezers.
  • Does anyone know of a good place to send fridges/freezers for cash in Berkshire area,or if you want to collect them to get cash your more than welcome as they been dumped.

Good thread this one. I scrap white goods myself. But I've never seperated the drum from the washing machine or drier. But I will do now, thanks for the tip. Another one for you is to seperate the pump & its feeding tube, where you usually find a few coins.
Another thing I do is collect untreated pallets and cut it up for firewood. 12-15 pallets make a ton bag which should make you a minimum of £25.

I can get pallets from work but have no idea where I would sell the firewood. Do you sell yours by the ton or do you split it down and sell small amounts by the bag? Who do you sell to and where?

    Thanks

Have'ntbeen on here for a week or two (or 3 or 4). I will try to answer some of the questions posted above.

Anyone can take any scrap they collect to a scrap metal dealer, but make sure you have enough to cover the cost of transport. I use a hanging scale with a 25Kg limit, then log the wieght of each bag so I have an idea how much steel/Aluminium/copper etc. I have.
If collecting both steel and aly, mark the bags 'A' and 'S', so you don't end-up throwing the aly out with the stell.

Cables. Yes, the scrappy will take these, but will usually impose a 10 - 25% deduction for 'shrouded copper'. An easy way to remove the shrouding is to soak the cable in cellulose thinners over night, and it will come-off like putty. However thinners are expensive to buy in the first place, they also evaporate so you will need a sealable drum, and don't forget THINNERS ARE HIGHLY FLAMABLE.

Good tip about driving round council estates looking for white goods. You could alway put-up a sign (check for permission first though) informing people that you will collect white goods for free.

I have bought a heavy duty can-crusher to fit to the inside of my van to squash the cans even more. Will be fitting-it tomorrow if weather is nice.

Not sure about the pallets. If you know someone with a woodburner then approach them and ask if they want to buy some wood at £x.xx per ton.

    Thanks for your response Pat.

I haven't actually been out foargaing for recycleable stuff yet, I'm kind of shy. But I am collecting bits of copper and aluminium as and when I come across it so that I will have a bit of a head start should I need to cash it in.

I am lucky in that I have a large garage that I could store quite a lot of scrap in (if it wasn't already full of crap!).

I'm just trying to think of other stuff that I can collect to recycle for cash.

    Any ideas anyone?

as the price of metal is up, i am now saving my steel cans to sell, i go through 3 giant tins of dog food a day, and it is suprising how quick the tins mount up over a few weeks:rotfl:

I am looking for someone who will pay for plastic coat hangers, i get loads of the flipping this in at work, i am also looking for a quick way of getting the metal hook out of hte pastic bodied hangers too..... flip i sound really sad saying that dont i:cool::rotfl:

I'm going to start looking for a can crusher on ebay today. Thanks everyone for this really useful discussion. How do you tell aluminium cans from steel? (or is that a really stupid question??).

We've got a lot of old household wires and cables that we have no idea where they came from or what they are for, so we are burning the plastic off them to weigh in when we have a decent sized bag.

A scrapyard that we have used before actually take old clothing for £1/10kg so that's also worth looking into.
