Reward Checker - Tesco Error?

Hi

First post, so go easy!

I have worked out (call me geeky if you like!) that the Tesco options of the Reward Checker does not take into account if the annual spend is entirely in a Tesco store (eg. 5 pts per £4 spend instead of 1 pt per £4 spend). Combining a purely Tesco shop with the rewards deals makes around £5 per £100 spend or effectively 5% cashback.

As Martin mentions, you should have a card for each situation that arises, so as alot of people on these boards do shop in Tesco's, this would be an ideal card for purely shopping in Tesco's.

Therefore I think the reward checker is slightly miss-leading, without taking this into account?

    Hi Stphnsteven,

Thanks for posting, you make a valid point. However, the valuation process for all the schemes assessed deliberately omits spending in stores related to the reward scheme, if they pay a preferential rate of points. This is fully explained in the "How it Works" text below the Reward Checker itself, and in this full article on the Valuation Process http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1147870054,34726,

The specific point about Tesco is important because, as you point out, many people shop there. Having thought about this whicle putting together the Reward Cards article, Martin has now written a full article about maximising the value of Loyalty Schemes - particularly Tesco, AirMiles and Nectar points. You can read it here:

    Hi Again,

Thanks to the reply above. I have read the article you mentioned on reward points.

Can I just ask a question on this bit::money:
"The new Tesco Clubcard credit card pays 5 points per £4 spent in Tesco and 1 point elsewhere and, like other schemes, thus promotes ‘use your card in store and gain more’.

Yet a normal Clubcard pays 4 points per £4 spend in store anyway, thus credit card use only gains 1 extra point, the same as elsewhere, so you’d actually be better off spending in Tesco on a cashback credit card and using a normal Clubcard."

I always thought if you paid with a Tesco reward points credit card that these were EXTRA points on top of the normal reward points you would get on your clubcard? Is this not the case?

Also - is it possible for someone to work out what is the best way to pay for your shopping at Tesco (Tesco Credit card, Clubcard Plus account or other cashback card or something completely different again!!!) to maxmise the return you receive.

Finally, I have heard if you regulerly spend £50 or more at Tesco per week, that you automatically receive double points - Anybody else heard of this?

The points are not EXTRA on-top of your normal points - the quote is correct.

The Money Sensei Martin is right !!!!
    (I checked with Tesco)

Important point = Read the terms and conditions throughly!!!!!

Only 1 extra point in for using Tesco Credit Card - I have lost faith in this card now!

However, Tesco 'deals' (4xvalue) will probably keep me shopping there, just need to rethink what way is the best to pay.

    Apologies

the best way to pay for shopping and petrol in tesco is easily Clubcard plus if you're a points collector. You get double points on everything you buy using this card. pay money in at customer service before you shop so you don't lose interest on your money.
