Sky dont lease/rent boxes. The customer always owns them.
After the initial 12month contract, they may want it back if you cancel within the 12 months.

This is really strange! I've tried several times to retune the freeview box after switchover. This evening I disconnected it as it was no use-don't know why, but on a whim, decided to reconnect everything again. I turned it on and it immediately retuned. It works! Apart from BBC 1 which keeps freezing and breaking up.

But you said in your original post that you had an old Sky box, not a Freeview box?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Yes, I had been using a freeview box, but had problems with the aerial and retuning it. A friend is going to give me an old sky box.

Are you going to have to get a dish fitted then?

I may still have to get a dish fitted if I can't get BBC1, but am reluctant to spend on this as I'm intending to sell and move to another part of the country.

Your friend's old Sky box will be of no use to you without a dish.

Thank you for all your replies. I wanted to update you (but perhaps I should hang my head in shame on this site!) The freeview box stopped working again. So, I did a complete U-turn and bought a new HD-Ready TV (but not a huge one), and a Freesat dish (definately not wanting Sky). I'm absolutely delighted with my purchases and am amazed at how superior my new TV is compared to my old one-and how much smaller!
