Yes I am self employed and submit my tax return online but I have not been bankrupt.
    He asked for
my full name including any middle names
    Address
    DOB
    National Insurance number
    Place of birth.

They already have my bank details because it was on an original tax return I submitted.
I am beginning to wonder if it is genuine because the money has definitely not gone into any bank account I have ever had.
It will be interesting to see what the reply to the letter is I have just sent them.
    Thankyou for your replies.

HMRC don't send a letter saying you have overpaid - it would be in the form of a statement. Is this what you have received?

Does the statement show your correct details? E.g. NI number, address, UTR, etc?

    Yes.
It even has details of payments I am making off my last tax bill and some of the overpayment has been used to clear this, leaving a balance of around £1550.

Not to be rude here, but place of birth is NOT a security question, HMRC dont show that info on the records, i'd ring up and try again, if I was you.

If you wait for a reply to a letter it will be at least mid Jan before you hear.
