Never buy the Lidl vodka, it has a bizarre 'hairspray' taste to it :(

  • Standard Smirnoff is pretty ordinary vodka. Don't be fooled into thinking it's anything like a premium product. It's really no different to the supermarket own brands (not to value stuff, but the stuff just above that). You can tell when vodka (and gin, and rum) has been made to the minimum standards, because it's always 37.5% rather than 40% Russian Standard is usually on offer over Christmas, and that's not bad. If you're just mixing it though, Imperial, Vladivar, Chekov, Red Square, Skyy, Absolut, Stoli, Wyborowa, Glens, Finlandia, Russian Standard, and Eristoff are all as good as or better than Smirnoff, so I'd go for whatever's the cheapest.

I wouldn't drink any of them straight though. Zubrowka and Ketel One are the only relatively low priced vodkas I like on their own.

I find that anything that is triple filtered goes down a lot easier than anything that's not. I always try to find anything that's on offer that's triple filtered.

Best of the supermarket own brands is the Waitrose version. And agree about good quality mixers.

OH brought home some Polish charcoal filtered vodka the other day. It was so revolting we couldn't actually drink it. Tasted like pencils!

Anything less than Smirnoff and I get an awful headache the next day....

I have found the Russian Standard Vodka which you can get for around £10 (70cl bottle) to be better than the smirnoof, I do not get the heartburn or headaches that I used to get with smirnoff and it is a lot smoother than smirnoff. My absolute favourie is the bisongrass vodka, got some in the summer as a present and it is great.
