    Just to confirm, it is perfectly legal and actually quite normal for a car to be the property of Mrs X and insured by Mr X or vice versa, but you need to let the insurance company know so they can set the policy up correctly. If the car is written off, the payment needs to be made to the owner of the car, not the driver!

    That's right. The only thing that's needed is to notify the insurers who are likely to do nothing more than exclude the wife from driving.

    If you need to keep the car insured againt theft/vandalism whilst you sell it/wait for the ban to expire/pass your own test.

    Could be worth looking for "laid up insurance", you can't drive it but will be covered against fire/theft. They shouldn't care about the license
