as lots of others things in modern life, chippys dont make staircases anymore cause they are made in a factory.
same with kitchens, i only know 1 chippy who can/will still make a complete kitchen from scratch.

depending on where you live, i know a joinery who only make stairs. i use them whenever i need one. they are based in Cwmbran South Wales but i'm sure they deliver nationwide. They provide design and fitting service aswell. PM me if you would like heir details

Must still be some that do, i've definitely seen at least one made from scratch on Grand Designs but it was the very bespoke end of the market (gothic style staircase adorned with wood carved gargoyles!) and was made off site in a woodcarvers workshop. As with everything they don't make it like they used to..but if you pay enough there's often a specialist who does!

Still a nice big woodwork project for some mad DIYer ..can't imagine who....though i'm more likely to build myself a lift as i totally hate stairs lol ;)

I wonder if it's because of building regulations. You have to be a mathematician to work it all out - perhaps the risk is too great.

As someone else said get a decent local carpenter in see if actually need replacing or just repairing there a lot you can do to stair cases to get rid of creeks and such like. Would be much cheaper and convent.
  • Thank you everyone for your advice and clarification. My mind is clearer now, and I decide that I will call a local carpenter or flooring man to check first. Hopefully they will suggest minor repair only.
