Where do you buy a new staircase?

Hi all, I need to buy a new staircase (including the installation service). This will be the first improvement since we moved in last year. However, there are many companies on the web, which makes it difficult to choose.

Does anyone have experience in this matter? Which one would you recommend? I would need a companie covering London or Essex.

Do you mean entire staircase as in the stairs themselves or just the banisters, spindles etc? A local carpenter or joiner should be able to build you a basic bespoke timber staircase. At least then you know it will fit! No experience of this so no idea if it's cheaper or not than buying a pre-built one! Wickes or B&Q have ranges of banister rails, newel posts, spindles etc you could have a look at.
  • In my case, it is the entire staircase. The house was built in the 1930s and now every time we walk on the floor, the floor makes cracking noise.

Jeld-Wen do staircases, the quote we had was much cheaper than others we'd looked at. They don't supply direct so you have to go through some kind of third party. We use Jewson because we spend a small fortune there anyway but there is an online company whose name escapes me that were offering really decent prices to the public on Jeldwen windows etc. I'm sure it's 'doors and more'

Someone from Jeld-Wen will come out and measure it all up so that the finished article complies to building regs and then you sign your order with the third party. Bit of a pain in the bum but we managed to get a ball park figure from Jeld-Wen so that we could work out the thrid party mark-up and knock them down on their price!

and yes it was doors & more that I'd looked at:

We had a quote from Charles Grosvenor but that was double the price!

Get the Yellow pages/Thompson local and look for Joinary manufactures local to you.
    Creaking staircases can be repaired.

Indeed, there is someone that advertises in my local paper as a staircase restoration specialist!

  • Thank you, Doozergirl. Your info is very helpful, although it sounds like it is not the most convenient way. I'll check out the websites.

To plumb1, thank you for suggesting the word "Joinary manufactures".

Is building staircases from scratch becoming a dead trade for chippies then? My neighbour, a retired chippie, built a few in his time. Drops in standards in the trades?..even spelling is gone...hey plumb1 lol ;)

surely a repair/fix is going to be more convenient than ripping out an entire staircase & having a new one fitted?
