Perhaps instead of spouting off "Utter utter, tosh" and "Rubbish!!!!!!!" you should read what the OP said and what I said:-

The OP was enquiring about using a debit card overseas - or hadn't you noticed ?

I wouldn't use my debit card in London either - anyone who does is taking an unnecessary additional risk - let the fraudsters spend the bank's money not yours !

I read both and my reply was not a reply to the original post it was a reply to the tripe that you had spouted.

I have been around a bit and i've used my debit card all over the world and never once have I had my card cloned, or money taken from it without my knowledge.

Your comment that you would'nt use your debit card in London just highlights your narrow mindedness.

Hell im amazed that your even on the internet given all the hacking and phishing that goes on.

    So to the OP

Just a quick question. Is it OK to use a VISA debit card when in America.
(yup its fine and one of the best ways to make get the most for your money ig you have the right card, ie the nationwide flex account)

If so is it free if you pay for meals or is there an admin fee
(nope you will pay a handling fee and the money will be converted to todays rate of exchange, which can be favourable in comparison with the time you could/would have bought dollars)

Also are you charged a cash advance fee if you take money out of the ATM
(depends on card, I recently used my halifax card in NY withdrawing cash from an HSBC machine and no handling fee and a better rate of exchange than i bought my dollars at)

Also remember if you are given the option to pay in dollars or pounds always pay in dollars as the shop will have a less preferential rate of exchange than your bank

Assuming you intend to use it for foreign exchange then the fees would be enough to put me off:

You don't say which Visa debit card - they vary in terms of fees.

We have a Nationwide account which is only used for holidays which typically take place in the US. Never had any issue with security on that card.

We have had issues with both debit cards and credit cards used soley in the UK.

So I wouldn't be terribly concerned about card security in the US in general. There are always horror stories of course, but they happen everywhere.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Stephb1986 - wasn't there a news story recently that stated that BA's call centre staff were selling credit card details...

Hiya, I don't know but I booked my tickets through a travel agent and I'm flying with Delta, I'm pretty sure my details must of been sold or used by someone who works at Radley (the bag shop) considering they were trying to buy a Louis Vuitton handbag :(

    Gits :)

You can always tell when someone is losing an argument - they resort to insults instead of reasoned statements !

The OP may wish to look at this US website, especially the bits about fraud and card loss/theft - there are plenty of others too !
