visa debit card usa

Hi all

Just a quick question. Is it OK to use a VISA debit card when in America.

If so is it free if you pay for meals or is there an admin fee

Also are you charged a cash advance fee if you take money out of the ATM

thanks

Not sure of the answer to most of your question's. However my hubby did inform the bank he was going to use his abroad on our recent holiday and the first time he tried to use it, it was refused. He was just told he need to contact his bank. No issues with available funds, he didn't try again. We were also in America.
  • I assume that it will be just like using a VISA debit everywhere else in the world, you will be charged a fee everywhere that you use the card, plus a currency conversion fee

NEVER use a debit card overseas - except in an ATM. You are potentially giving your bank account to anyone - they will empty it long before you get home.
Use a credit card if you can.(NOT in an ATM though !)

    Utter utter tosh!!!!

So whats the difference between using your debit card in london or new york??

So prey do tell am i more secure paying with a debit card if I go to london for a long weekend or if im on the last day of a trip to NY???

    Rubbish !!!!!!!!!!
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right
  • Well I have a Barclaycard and only used it in 4 places because I have so much money in my current account that I don't really need to use my credit card, I came in the other day to a phone call from Barclaycard fraud team asking if I have tried to buy a Louis Vuitton handbag online for the lovely sum of £500. I said no of course because obviously I didn't.

Considering I use my cash card everywhere and it's never been cloned is saying something and I've only used my credit card in 4 places, three times on the phone and once in store in a Radley shop I found it quite interesting that it was a handbag that was trying to be bought when I had used it for, twice for airline tickets on the phone, once on the phone for some knifes and once in a handbag shop.

I'm going to NYC in May so will $800 be enough or do I need more I'm going for 8 days.

    Steph xx

Phatbear has your fur dried off yet? :)
  • I use my Nationwide visa debit card when I go to the USA...less fees. I also take a mix of dollars and sometimes travellers cheques...it is worth using debit cards in ATM's, but for meals, etc I always paid in cash...you really need a card for hotel reservations, though...or at least I did.

As for how much money to take - how long is a piece of string? :). All depends on where you want to eat, how much you want to shop, what you want to see, etc. USA is cheaper than the UK, but as the exchange rate isn't so good, it's not as cheap as it used to be!

Stephb1986 - wasn't there a news story recently that stated that BA's call centre staff were selling credit card details...

Perhaps instead of spouting off "Utter utter, tosh" and "Rubbish!!!!!!!" you should read what the OP said and what I said:-

The OP was enquiring about using a debit card overseas - or hadn't you noticed ?

I wouldn't use my debit card in London either - anyone who does is taking an unnecessary additional risk - let the fraudsters spend the bank's money not yours !

Q Is it OK to use a VISA debit card when in America.
A Yes, butdon't rely on just one card, and take care not to let it out of sight - some might say using a credit card means less trouble if its mis-used

A If so is it free if you pay for meals or is there an admin fee
Q You will be charged the cost of the meal at an exchange rate decided by VISA ( much closer to mid rate than tourist rate)
Your provider (bank) will levy a % fee .. 3% is common- some used to not charge this fee although believe many do now charge a little ( read up on articles / ask you bank) + some banks also charge a flat flat ( say £1) on each transaction... again depends on provider

Q Also are you charged a cash advance fee if you take money out of the ATM
A Again will depend on your provider + many US ATM's levy a small fee as well

Personally I've been happy to use my ( nationwide ) debit card in ATM's and my Credit card ( Abbey Zero / nationwide) for purchases
