Gallbladder Pain

Comments

  • I had mine removed June last year and I would swear it has a twin. I still get twinges and sometimes it feels as if something is digging in just under the ribs.

Not long after the op, I had a couple of scans, and they showed that everything was normal.
  • One complication that tends to come with gall bladder removal is irritable bowel.

I have suffered ever since mine was removed in 2005. I have pains in the sight of the gall bladder and further down in my stomach.

I eventually got prescribed Lansopraxole which I take every morning before food. It seems to stablise the pain, and every now and then I need to take two if the pain increases again. It really has been a help, I only got prescribed these tablets out of chance by an out of hours doctor when I felt I was about to have a heart attack the pains were so severe, and they have been a blessing ever since.

I've just had a bout of gall bladder pain this weekend and now feel like I've been kicked by a mule but at least the spasm is over.
I was wondering what everyone did to relieve the pain when it's at it's worst.
My doctor always says just go to casualty when you get an attack but when you are in so much pain you just can't move.
I've had several scans and they've never found any stones but the gall duct is very enlarged permanently as is my gallbladder which at least once a year becomes infected and then I have to have a course of three lots of antibiotics together which has nasty side effects.
I get the colic every couple of months.
Like you I take lansoperazole as I have gastric tract ulcers and terrible irritable bowel.
Any tips on the pain management would be appreciated my doctor is no use just gives me co-dydramol which does'nt even hit it.
    Thanks.
  • I was given co-codamol and diclofenic. Personally the only thing that got rid of the pain for me was morphine.
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!

I don't know if you know but eating foods with skins on can cause the most terrible pains.

I was only told it was fatty foods, but it is also things that take a lot of breaking down like the skins. So I would try to peel as much as you can, including soft fruits, peaches, pears, tomatoes, etc. Also raisins and other dried fruit is a killer. I remember mine was at its worst when I had prepared my baby's weaning foods and had eaten the skins of the pears and apples as I peeled them. That had to be the worst pain of all, a whole bag of the wretched fruit!

For me no amount of positioning would work.

My gall bladder kicked off after pregnancy, which I gather is quite common. I was given Tramadol (not sure on the spelling) on the postnatal ward (I felt like I was in labour, I didn't get any sympathy!) and this did help dull the pain. It is addictive so they don't like to prescribe it, but it doesn't knock you out the same as morphine, although you are still out of it.

I used to lie as still as I could and let the pain sleep itself off when it had done its worst. In some ways it is a bit like labour, for me it used to get worse and worse and then slowly sort itself out over a 24/48 hour period.

Talking about sympathy, I never did get my husband to understand the pain I was in, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but I wished he had understood, understanding goes a long way to getting through the pain, and while I was clawing my way up the stairs in agony he did often tell me to pull myself together and look after my son. I will never forget that! So any partners out there, believe me it is a dreadful pain and not to be taken lightly!!

Nothing you can do. I think. Apart from move. I remember trying to sleep in really funny positions so that the motion of my breathing would move the gallbladder, thus alleviating the pain.
Any painkillers worked for an hour and anything strong made me sleep until the pain came back and you just wait for your next dose. I spent last Xmas at a&e and morphine didn't touch the pain. So glad it's out now :T
