Can I get out of my contract?

I have a monthly contract with T-Mobile which is at the end of its current 12 month contract in Jan 2007.
I want to go to Pay as You Go as I just don't use the phone. My current contract is 750 off peak minutes and 50 texts a month for £15 and I don't use any of the minutes and maybe send 5 texts a month maximum. It's dead money I'm paying each month that I can't afford.
Is there any way of getting out of the contract, keep the phone and get a T-mobile pay as you go sim (obviously with a new number)? I don't want to get into trouble with them by cancelling the direct debit and ending up with a bill from now until next Jan, but I was wondering if there was any way of ending the monthly plan and swapping?
Any help or ideas would be gratefully received.

Only by paying up your monthly rental payments to the contract end date! They should then send you a PAYG SIM. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Unlikey without paying the full amount upfront as the money you pay is to cover the cost of the handset. Check that you are on the cheapest tariff they have and if not request that they move you.

many thanks - I'm already on the cheapest tariff available - I'll just haveto grit my teeth until January and then cancel the contract."Stay Wonky":D
