  • What budget are you looking at. The wii will come with one controller (usually), and it's the extra bits that add up costs. Argos and currys have a package at about £179 at the moment, and i knnow there will be more around. Depends what you want to spend.

There have been a lot of packages at £149 recently, so keep an eye as Christmas gets closer. Make sure it is the newer bundle that comes with Wii Sports Resort and a Motion Plus add-on (for more sensitive control) as this normally retails for around £40 by itself

You will want to get at least one extra Wii remote (£25) and Nunchuck controller (£15).

You may want to consider getting Wii Play (£30), which is a simple game, but comes bundled with a Wii Remote.

Loads of other games to choose from - it all depends on what type you want to play.

There are always deals to be had on games, so never pay retail !!
  • We've been picking up games at the local boot sale, 2 for £10 - not brilliant games but a good saving of at least £30.

Controllers are slightly cheaper in the game shops (second hand).

Shops such as CEX, Game and GameStation ( maybe even HMV now ) sell games second hand. They just won't be as cheap as at a car boot sale.

You can buy a PlayStation 2 from Play.com for £49.99. Then you'd have access to a vast number of games, new and second-hand, with a console that is technically at a similar level to the Wii.

Update: I thought the PS2s at Play were new. They aren't.

to be honest, I can often find a game CHEAPER new, than second hand in some of these places. Not saying always of course, but most of the main stores / online retailers do special offers. You just need to do your research and wait for that game to come up on a deal.

Get a 360 or PS3. Most people get bored with the wii very quickly and at 7, no 'proper' games (rather than the minigame compendiums populating most wii releases) should be too challenging for him. There are a few good games on the wii, but not enough to consider it REALLY worth it as the main console.

Remember, the first 3 mario games, and most NES/snes era games were hard as nails, but kids played them with ease.

I loathe the Wii. Its games catalogue is full of silly novelty games, it's seriously under-powered (it's barely a "next-gen" console at all), it has pretty bad graphics, and it has that silly controller.

I know people will say that I'm missing the point and it's supposed to be all about fun, but it's not fun. There's only a handful of games in which the Wii controller makes any sense, and in all the others, it's just annoying.

Wii owners use their console less than the owners of any other console (Xbox 360 owners use theirs the most), so it seems that many Wii owners come to agree with me eventually.

Anyhow, the OP has purchased a Gamecube, so my feelings towards the Wii are academic.
