Baxi Bermuda BBU HE Any experiences?

Seeing the boiler 'scrappage' scheme announced has got me thinking about our old 1970's Baxi Bermuda which is still working OK but is probably rated 'E' or 'F' (so unlikely to qualify for 'scrappage'). It obviously won't last for ever and the amount of work to replace with a wall mounted condensing boiler somewhere would be horrendous. I see that Baxi have recently brought out an 'A' rated condensing back boiler which looks like a reasonably straightforward replacement for the old Bermudas - needs a new concentric chimney liner and a water discharge pipe for condensate but apparently can be installed in one day. They're a bit pricey, probably about £2000 with the boiler, electric fire front and new flue but there should be a big saving on installation, pipe re-routing, redecoration etc. Has anybody had any experience with the new Bermuda or any thoughst on it?

Web prices from heating suppliers seem to (VAT incl.) £1400-£1500 for the boiler/fire package plus £400-£500 for a 10 metre concentric flue. Probably then looking at 1 day's labour charge on top assuming no extra work needed. Would include full drain-down, flush and refill.

Cheers guys, some useful info. Have also been looking into replacing our old Baxi for some time and this looks like the great option without the need to cause major disruption.

I had an old Baxi Bermuda back boiler in my house. I had it replaced under the warmfront scheme - had to have a wall mounted condensing combi boiler. It took a team of 6 guys a day and half to remove the old boiler and water tank and install the new one. There was a whole mess of new pipes in the kitchen by the new boiler and I had an empty fireplace. Had to redecorate the kitchen and boarded over the fireplace (could have bought a new gas fire, but don't need it).

The new boiler is great. All in all, well worth the trouble.

It would have cost around £2000 IIRC, but was free. :j

I've just phoned our regular gas engineer, and he has no experience of these new back boilers, but says he'd be very wary, as they will probably create a lot of noise. (something to do with a fan?)
  • had this boiler fitted 24hrs ago and it is no noisier than the old back boiler.
looks great with the new fire fronts available cannot say much more on the performance at the mo but at least i got rid of the drafty hole in the wall( which provided air to the old boiler)

  • Hi. This is my first post so please bear with me - well, I posted a few minutes ago but my post didn't appear to make it so I'll try again. In short I have a Baxi Bermuda LFE3 Super gas fire with back boiler which Scottish Gas tell me is around 30 years old and so far has been very reliable. I had a quote from Scottish Gas earlier this month for the new Baxi condensing back boiler, Baxi electric fire and hearth/mantle/back panel for £6,229.82. I live in Dundee in a 1960s 2-storey 3-bedroom house with lounge, diningroom and heated conservatory. I thought this quote was pretty steep but then I had no idea what to expect. Could anyone advise please? Thanks!
  • Apparently if you have a Baxi back boiler flued to a ridge tile vent you cannot have this type of back boiler which is disappointing !!
But to be honest I phoned Baxi up and they did not seem to know !! which was surprising so I am assuming that the information was correct !!

If anyone knows different please post on here
  • I live in a 3 bed semi, the flu for the boiler goes up the chimney just like the old unit. The new liner (duble lined)takes in air to the boiler and expells gases All these new boilers produce condensate ( acid condensation I beleive). With the baxi bbu he, this is collected in the boiler and pumped out. Pump runs for a few seconds. My fireplace is not close to a drain so this condensate goes into a sump in the garden. Its all legal!
Cost boiler and firefront just over £3000 without vat. I had additional work but the total bill came to £4000 inc vat.
