VAT increase.

I took out a deal with a network based on x amount each month. In January the VAT is set to go up. As i signed a contract with a VAT rate of 15% do i keep paying that?

    If only :)

All line rentals reset to the 17.5% rate (eg £34.26 becomes £35) on 1st January.

I specifically checked with Orange when I took out my contract, and they confirmed that VAT would be 15% for the duration of it. I don't know whether that will apply across the board though, and admittedly it did surprise me that it wouldn't be going up.

Did you get it in writing? Taxes are excluded for price promises in any event.

I'm sure they meant that the VAT would be 15% for the duration of the period of time that VAT was 15%
  • The only way you price plan will remain the same is if the phone company absorbs the cost of the VAT rise. And that's about as likely as John and Edward winning Strictly Come Dancing.
  • I got a text today from Vodafone informing me the VAT is going back up from Jan 1st and therefore to expect an increase in my monthly bill...

    ...which will be 8p a month... :D

I did not. For the sake of 25p a month it was a matter of curiosity rather than anything else.

Alas not. I specifically asked whether the price would go up when the VAT went back up, and I was told it wouldn't.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure there is a decent chance that the person who told me that was mistaken, and if that 25p is added on to my bill from January I won't exactly kick up a fuss. But I have definitely been told on one occasion that VAT would stay at 15% for the duration of my contract.

You don't pay the VAT the operator does, so they can keep it at '15%' if they want to, they can charge whatever monthly price they like, but they will have to legally pay HMRC the 17.5%.
