Ok, its coming near to uni time!! Still no luck on the placement front!!! I was really considering doing what Sillychuckie recommended and take a gap year away from uni. I really want to get a full time job/placement for a year for financial reasons and was wondering if anyone else had taken a gap year in order to do this?

I guess its totally down to the course and whether they'll let you.

I would keep hunting, you got the following summer to eat in to should you get a placement late?

    - The fact my CV says a 'gap year' rather than a 'placement year' makes it clearer I found the job myself with no uni help. This gives out a better impression to graduate employers who have already expressed interest why I took the year as a gap year. They usually seem impressed when I explain myself (during interviews etc).

Wish i'd thought of taking a gap year instead of a placement year! I was offered a 12 month contract for a placement, but they wouldn't play ball with uni, wouldn't agree to meet tutors etc! Didn't consider taking a year out as being an option!

On a more positive side, the company's offered to give me paid work experience over Christmas and Easter, and a contract on graduation, subject to vacancies, in addition to work experience I gained with them earlier this year.

The deadline for the placement is 25th September. I was just wondering, if I was to take a gap year.....would i still be taxed as a student or.....

No, but as the tax year runs from April - April you shouldn't pay much tax as you'll be able to use both this years and next's allowance.

Doesn't the student tax thing only apply if you earn up to your tax limit anyway (i.e. about £5000)? So any subsequent earnings after that have to be taxed regardless of status?

Yup. Being 'taxed as a student' is exactly the same as being 'taxed as a regular person'. Although if you work for two tax half-years (September to March and April to September) you do pay less tax than you would if you were paid the same amount over one full tax year, because you get the benefit of the Personal Allowance in each year.

Makes no difference to National Insurance, however, which is calculated on a weekly / monthly basis.

That's as I thought.... The student declaration form (P38 I think) declares that you wish to use all your allowance on a temporary Summer job, and is only valid if you don't work during term time.

Great opportunity get in at the beginning. I have a lot of experience in the business. Anyone want to get seriously involved for a year or so?
