Yes, stop the 1 or 2 a day. Go back to square 1 and start again. You don't say how many you used to smoke each day but I would guess you were a reasonably heavy smoker. The vast majority of smokers cannot stop at 1 a day or 2 a day It will just go up and up until you are smoking the same again. If you do start again then mentally prepare yourself and try to quit again. You can succeed. It took me about 10 serious attempts to quit but I did succeed. It will be 4 years in March for me.
You may find Allen Carr's book helpful [sorry, don't know the title]. It does help to explain the reasons for addiction. Knowledge helps your self control.
Really the most important factor to me was psychological. At 1st I really resented 'having to give up'. I had to turn it around in my own head so that I wasn't giving anything up. I was actually regaining so much, money, health, my children's health and wellbeing, self respect and so on. Now I really love being a non smoker. I still sometimes get a little buzz out of knowing that I'm free of my addiction.
Lastly I would recommend you stay on patches. I know some people have problems with them but I found them invaluable. Just make sure you reduce your dose as recommended.
Best of luck. You can do it.

I remeber my dad doing this when he gave up 10years ago. One problem now though he goes through about 40 polos a day instead

Me and the hubby quit together in March. He started again because he thought he could control it. He is now smoking as many as he was before he tried to quit. I haven't had another cigarette since I stopped. I was a 40 a day smoker for 25 years and this was my first serious attempt at stopping. I cannot stand the smell, it makes me feel physically sick and I can smell smokers as I walk through supermarkets etc. It narks me that I smelled so bad. I don't think I will ever smoke again. I do not get any urges or cravings any more, and consider myself a non-smoker, not an ex-smoker.

Btw, I used champix, not patches. Only one side effect once, forgot to have brekkie, took tablet, felt ikky!! I would highly recommend it.

Good luck with stopping, I know, seeing my husband struggle every day how difficult it is for some people. Although I think my hubby is passed the point of no return and to tell you the truth, I can't ever see him stopping!

Its funny you say that, because tastes change... I went off certain coffee's, then I could only drink tea for a time.

Patches don't work for everyone, and if your doctor is worth anything they will tell you this. I didn't want to try patches at all, I decided to go straight for the Champix because it has had such good results. I carried on smoking until about 6 weeks in, I had been cutting down, but hadn't stopped. Then I decided one night when I was having a sly one before bed, that I wouldn't have one in the morning. I had to talk myself out of having one, but I stuck to it. Mid-morning, I wanted another, talked myself around, by lunchtime I was so proud that I had lasted so long, so I thought if I can do half a day, I can do the day, and basically, for the first few days I had to talk myself around. It got easier when the hubby stopped too, but then I began to smell it on him again. He denied it at first, but I knew he was smoking again, I could taste it. I could have picked one up then and started again, but I made the decision not to and haven't looked back since.

You still have to have willpower, you still have to be strong, and even when you stop you will still want to pick one up.... even your hands will try to do it without you thinking about it lol, but if you persist, after a few weeks you will be through the worst and every day just gets easier and easier.

Its not something I think about at all these days to tell you the truth. I think my moment was when I went to Germany with some family members to visit where we used to live. I laughed to see the desperation to get out of the airport and have a fag..... OMG I used to be like that . Its a sad sad state of affairs, and when I smoked I had every excuse possible for my addiction.... now I know thats exactly what it is, an addiction, I had to get my fix, no different to any other addiction IMO.

Don't buy any! If you don't buy them, you can't smoke them.
When you are tempted to buy any buy something else instead such as sweets or mints.

I also made my house a totally nonsmoking house, which is appropiate anyway as I have children. Anyone who does smoke has to go outside. My oldest son smokes [he quit then started again] and he doesn't even bring his fags into the house. Thats how afraid I am of being tempted again!
