Keeping milk cold overnight - any ideas?

  • I was also going to suggest powdered milk. I think it has a reputation from years ago when it really wasn't very good, but it's absolutely fine in tea/coffee, baking etc these days.

My sister and her husband are the ONLY people I know of who got a 'Teasmaid' for a wedding present (May 1973), and then consistently used it EVERY DAY until the teapot broke about 2yrs ago. They loved it so much that they went out and bought a new one .

You can get replacement teapots - we have 2 for ours so one can be in the DW overnight and the other in the teasmaid:p

We love our teasmaid (second to our AGA) we've had it for 7 years and it is fab. Our milk goes in a small metal flask (enough for second cups) and has always been fine as long as it is fresh when it goes in.

You could try leaving a carton of milk on the window ledge overnight. I used to do this as a student because students used to pinch other people's milk from the fridge in the halls of residence.

I promise it won't turn into cheese!

You weren't at the same place as me in the 90s were you? It took me ages to work out why so many of the windows in the halls had Tesco bags hanging out of them. There again, I was used to warm milk, straight from the 'coo' at home!
  • We had our first tea-without-leaving-the-duvet yesterday morning, and it was great! Kettle was on timer on the bedside table, the milk was in the cups, and teabags were sat in the pot waiting. It was definitely worth the hassle the night before.

As it gets warmer we'll switch to milk ice cubes!

At my uni we had milk on our windowsills too - every student had a kettle in their room so it was doubly cool!

I looked into buying a teasmaid and decided it was too expensive; instead I have a travel kettle and a plastic tub of tea bags in the bedside cabinet. I've been wondering how I would keep milk cool overnight so thanks for the ice cube idea! :T

Its bliss to have that first mug of tea in bed, a real luxury after so many years of waking with the alarm at 6am ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

They tried everywhere to get a replacement teapot that would fit their model, but to no avail - really p****d b-i-l off, as he loves vfm ;). BUT, as it was 30+yrs old, and bought for them as a wedding pressie, couldn't get much more vfm :rotfl:.
  • The best solution is to get a man who thinks it a privilege to get out of bed first and bring tea. This is the same sort of man who'll let you have the last slice of cake/choc in box, and who will offer to swap meals in a restaurant if your choice turns out not to be as good as his.

I have one of those, they are great for tea and swaps (but they can have other, much more serious, hidden defects that cannot be fixed - so beware!).:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

We got a teasmade from someone on Freecycle and have used it pretty much every day. It's not much to look at, but beats standing in a cold kitchen waiting for the kettle to boil.

Ours doesn't have a jug for the milk so we use a small Thermos flask which keeps it fresh overnight.
