Keeping milk cold overnight - any ideas?

This morning when OH and I were arguing over who had to get out of bed and make the tea I had a brainwave - we could get a little mini kettle and keep it in our bedroom, and make the tea there in the morning (B&B style!). We'd bring the cups up the night before etc. My only issue is how to keep the milk cold. I'm not too worried at the moment, as it's so cold that it can just sit (covered) in the cups overnight. But as it gets warmer (O happy days!) what do people suggest for keeping it cold? Would a thermos work for that long? I suppose it doesn't need to be ice cold, just not go rank overnight. OH suggested trying to get some of those little tubs of UHT but a) UHT in tea is gross and b) the packaging is very wasteful!

Reminds me of when I was at uni and used my little balcony as a fridge for 4 months of the year.

Why not buy a 'Teasmaid'? They can be set to have the tea ready for when you want to wake up (an alarm goes off I think) and as far as I know they have a little metal jug with them? If not you could buy one, I think the milk would stay fairly cold in one of those.

Freeze the milk in ice cube trays and then before going to bed put a few cubes in the bottom of a small thermos flask. By morning the cubes will have melted but the milk should still be cold.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

you could have a little flask and take it up at bedtime or you could have a little mini fridge but obviously they are pricier.

Well, it starts to get more trouble than it's worth in some ways doesn't it??!!.....................but if you could get hold of some of those little kids plastic mini-pops bottles, you could freeze the right amount of milk in each and just grab one from the freezer each night.
  • ha ha hubby wanted to do this when we moved into our house few years ago its a 3 storey house and our bedroom is on top floor and kitchen on bottom, lazy !!!!!! I said we can get up an make it which we do.

but he looked into getting one of those mini fridges for keeping the milk warm.

you could sit the milk in a sink of cold water.
  • Or do as my Mum did, as she never owned a fridge, stick the milk in a small bottle or metal jug in a bowl of cold water.
I used to own a 'Teasmaid' back in the seventies, but gave it away I we neveer had the time to use it.You could probably find one in a charity shop possibly as I should think they are maybe not even made anymore. Our one had a radio and an alarm clock on it as well.

Next you`ll be arguing over who gets up to put the mini kettle on.
Either take it in turns or do what my partner does
snore on `til I get up.
  • Thanks folks - these ideas are great.

I'd much prefer to make a little bit of effort the night before than go down to the cold kitchen in the morning. I think I'll try the milk ice cubes idea - thanks for that!

Teasmaids are an amazing idea in principle but I don't get on with the way they look. I don't like clutter, so I want a little kettle that can live in OH's bedside table!

You wouldn't believe I'm a morning person would you?

I'm the one who shirks tea duty in this relationship! My cunning plan is to fill the kettle the night before and put it on one of the bedside tables so that all we have to do is flick the switch as we press snooze (before I got married snooze didn't exist to me!).

I do this as our kitchen is on the ground floor and the bedroom on the second floor. When dh is going to work he brings me a cuppa, but he's now working away. I 've put the holiday kettle in our room, milk goes on the windowledge. Have a little cooler but it makes a noise. THis doesn't bother me, but I think dh would object. in container in the wash basin with cloth over the top dipping in water should work.
