Existing Talktalk broadband customer wanting to upgrade to Pro

I wondered if anyone could help me. I received a call on Monday from Talktalk offering to upgrade my package to Pro but at the time didn't have time speak with anyone about the benefits. I've looked at the website this morning and decided I want to go Pro but on calling to upgrade I was told that yes I could upgrade but when I asked if my existing router would be adequate to provide the new speed I was told no and that I would have to purchase the N-router for £50. I'm really confused now and am no better off. Can anyone let me know 1) whether I need the router and 2) if so how I can get it for free when ultimately it will be costing me more money each month!
Thanks in advance

So it would help if you tell us what router you have at present?
And are you connecting wirelessly or by ethernet at the moment?
Wireless N will move data around your wireless home network quicker, but it won't make your linespeed any faster, as most existing routers will support speeds up to 24Mbps. It's your line speed that is probably the limiting factor. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Hi alli_baba2,
As Macman has said we would need to know what router you have at the moment. If you could also let us know your attenuation we can advise if you are likely to see a speed increase by moving to Pro. As long as your current router is ADSL 2+ enabled then there should be no problems. The N router would increase your wireless connection speed but would not affect your synch speed unless your current router is not ADSL 2+ enabled.
The N router is £30 for existing customers when taken with the Pro package and is not offered free when changing to this tariff. If you do want to change to Pro and you are out of contract then it would be worth contacting the retentions team on the customer services number to see if they can offer any further discounts for renewing your contract. That woudl tie you into another contract term though.
If you need any further help then please post here or at https://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums where we can be a little more specific about the services you have with TalkTalk.
Cheers
