What was amusing (and very true!) was when I told my husband, his only response was,

"If that was me, I would never have heard the end of it, would I? But because its you ......."

i too did this a couple of years ago. i went to the nearest branch for my bank and told them what time and where it was and said that the machine made a scratchy noise and no money came out.( didn't really ) they said that if the money isn't taken after so many seconds it draws it back in. the people who fill the machines up do audits each time and can tell which account the money belongs to. i got my money refunded within 2 weeks. don't despair.

A couple months ago I was withdrawing £100 to pay some bills and the machine froze up on the 'counting your cash' screen. there was a queue of people behind me and I just stood there waiting for my card like a numpty. I was alone, so I wasn't going to just leave my card and go into the bank in case my money came out and someone ran off with it! I was feeling the back of my neck burn by the time my card came out, I tell ya... :o

oh lor', other halves can be so.....

i really feel it for you. i've had mishaps with atms (one time, i asked for atm to give me £200 pounds. it spat out my card and told me to contact my bank. put card back in, checked balance, saw i had enough. asked for £200 again, again it spat out my card and said 'huh, who are you kidding'. went home and account was down by £400. never got it back!!)

    i know how you feel.

  • Ouch, melabarie! £400!! They really should have compensated you for that!
I went to a cashpoint, requested my last £20....and the cashpoint froze......waited ages, and nothing happened. The bank was open but I didn't want to go inside in case it decided to spit the card and money out while I was in there...a couple of women were walking past and I asked them to keep an eye on the ATM while I went inside. They agreed, I went in, cashier was really unhelpful, and while I was in there the women came in with my card and said "it just spat the card out". I thanked them for their help and went on my way. Checked my balance a moment later and £20 was gone.

Now, did the machine screw up, or did the women rip me off. I suspect the latter. Hopefully, both of them will die a painful death, screaming in agony. I hate to sound unsympathetic, but that sort of behaviour does put you in the "scumbag" category. I couldn't eat for three days because of that.

This reminds me of an incident at a Nationwide cash machine near me. I was waiting with my friend as she queued for the ATM. The woman in front of her had her card swallowed by the machine. Apparently it had happened to the guy in front too. She asked my friend to watch for her card while she went into the bank. My friend was in a rush and asked me to wait while she ran to a different ATM to get her own money out so I stood watching for the woman's card. She returned and was worried that my friend had run off with her card and money! I told her she hadn't and that the card hadn't come back (we were trustworthy) but obviously she was very concerned!

The bank actually said the ATM had been swallowing a lot of cards but it the ATM wasn't owned by them so there was nothing they could do! They said it had happened to a few people but wouldn't even put a notice on saying that it was malfunctioning! Goodness knows how many people had their card swallowed!

Usually if the moneys not taken within seconds it sucks it back in, if the ATM was in a quite area and no people were around you should be ok.
    Good Luck!

Don't beat yourself up too much, both DH and I have done this, luckily mine was only a tenner. DH drew out £50 and just walked away from it, l he turned around and spotted two kids walking away from the machine with the money, he grabbed one of them and yelled to the security guard nearby, one kid ran off and came walking back claiming to have found the money on the ground round the corner (yeah right) so he got it back but was gutted at himself for doing it.

I dont see whats wrong with what he did.

Ive seen threads here devoted to people who make lots of money when they pick up loose change off the street, it all adds up

The principle is still the same, regardless of the amount

To the op, you have my sympathies, i did this once, but luckily i realised about 30 seconds later and managed to get the money before someone pinched it :S

I felt like a right plonker
