Tuna is one of our cupboard staple so we're never out of it.
we also buy the basic tuna in brine in tesco/asda/sainsbury, 57p. totally agree you can't tell the difference from branded ones. same with the value porridge oats (others may disagree, we're not fussy).
am too always on the lookout for cheapest tuna.

at the moment the cheapest is at farmfoods. Princes ones 4 for £2, 50p per tin.
or at costco if you can get there.
    Stock up! :)

If you have a farmfoods near you definatly worth a visit they are selling packs of frozen chicken breast at £4.50 a pack or 3 packs for £10 - last week I got 16 chicken breasts in my 3 packs, some are so big that my youngest and I share one between us. I normally transfer them into food bags for freezer in 3 or 4's.

so it's good value this chicken, then? i was having second thoughts i thought i ought to compare first. but definitely will be buying some next time.
    Thanks!

    Seconded!
I bought a tin of tuna (about 39p) in B&M's once...oh dear god! I opened the tin...and found...BROWN WATER!!! :rotfl:
Straight in the bin...well, down the sink actually, seeing as there wasn't actually any 'solids' in there!

    AVOID!
Cheap doesn't always necessarily mean any good!

Yes, I got some in Iceland once, and it went straight in the bin too!

  • 4 packs of Princes and John West are sometimeson offer in the supermarkets for about £2.50, got a 4 pack from Tesco last week, if not then Bargain Madness and Home Bargains are usually that price anyway which is probably not that much more than value tuna flakes.

My OH actually used one of said tins of tuna and didn't drain the brine of outit, some salad that would have been :S when questioned he said he preferred it that way. Crazy man lol!!
Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!

Local Co-op were selling packs of 4 tins John West tuna last week for £2 - not been in since so don't know if that offer has ended yet.

Sounds like a high protein diet, how about eggs (good fats and protein), milk, yogurt (beware of sugar), cottage cheese, soya/tofu, Turkey or Turkey mince, white fish, sardines (good fats and protein) too?

Turkey mince is £2.00 for 562g in Tesco (though had a fair amount of fats, good fats mainly but did suprise me as Turkey is usually virtually fat free).

Does anyone know the price of Turkey mince in morrisons please?
  • Seeing as you're on a high protein diet, make sure you check the ingredients of the "chicken" you buy.
The cheap breasts already mentioned from Farmfoods and Iceland have about 20% or more, of non-chicken ingredients including water, dextrose and salt. You don't really need the extra carbs or salt if you are looking to lose weight.

    It's only a game

I defo second the smart price chicken breast fillets from ASDA - I would highly recommend their smart price turkey breast fillets too.

if you have a home and bargains or quality save near you then they tend 2 have john west tuna chunks tins for about 50p

The smartprice chicken breast fillets are rarely in stock at asda here in Cardiff! So can't be that bad :) x
