Maybe depending on whether they actually hung up the line or put the phone down and left the call live (ie put on hold or their system left it live).

If they put the phone down and disconnected then no you won't be charged.

    Check you bill.

Why use an 0845 number when geo numbers are available?

John Lewis number from the Saynoto0870 site; - 0800 188881

Other numbers available from the sayno site, just put John Lewis into the search box.

The bad news - yes, you will be charged.

The fact the person you called hung up, doesn't matter - YOU control the line as the call initiator, and as such the connection from your phone to the distant party remains established - even though they hang up, the call does not clear down until YOU do, so it will be treated as an ongoing call until your handset relinquishes the line.

So - if you do not handle the phone for a year afterwards it could get to be expensive.

My understanding is that if the called phone (but not the caller) hangs up the call will clear after a few minutes.

A YEAR? Hardly - notwithstanding the caller will probably use the line again to clear the 'hold' the recipient could also report the line as faulty, and a reset wqill release the captured line.

As the OP discovered to hia advantage, only 4 minutes of wasted calltime was billed, this timeout is set at the exchange, and there is no guarantee each exchange (or company) has the same safety measures in place.

The best advice remains to take care when hanging up, to ensure you only get charged for what you use.

A tip is to always clear down and get dial tone again. That way, if the handset doesn't go down properly or your phone doesn't detect that you put the receiver down, the worst that will happen is that people will get busy tone and won't be able to call you.

It's good to have the existence of the previously unmentioned timeout confirmed. 3 minutes maximum for the OP.

In the days of Strowger exchanges it was possible for this happen, but modern electronic exchanges terminate the call if either person hangs up.

Many years ago there was a case at the White City dog track when a betting gang phoned into every bookie at the track, then left their phones "on" which prevented the bookies phoning out to lay off the bets that were being placed inside the track. They made quite a killing I believe.

Even in the days of Stroweger there was a time out force release from thr 1st Code Selector after the reversal of line polarity when the called sub replaced the receiver. It was 3 to 6 minutes.
