Sainsbury's took her card!

Since the bank lady on the phone asked for her card number, how did they expect her to give it to them unless she had the card.
Telepathy, magic? Umm !! Maybe you are so wonderful you can memorise every long card number you have.
Join the real world.
Now, if the abused employee had been asked to ring the number on the back of the card to be put through to the bank in question things may have been solved earlier, to both parties satisfaction.
I'm guessing he rang up the authorisation of payments department company. Again.
But that would be the sensible approach to take.
Clearly it wasn't taken.
I fully expect this to appear in the money section of The Mail. (Or maybe The Sun.)
Customer didn't ask them to ring the bank, they asked them to ring up the people who declined the auth.
Understandable for someone who doesn't know how bank works, understandable for a 16 yr old in Morrisons wondering why someone is screaming at him.
Or, sadly from recent history, the back page of the Money section of Saturday's Guardian.Conjugating the verb 'to be":

Is this thread STILL going? Jeez... I must remember it when I get my next bout of insomnia...0

Just out of wonder, what did Natwest say when the customer called?
I remember working in another major supermarket, and around this time there were many times when colleagues passed customers over to me to have to call streamline to confirm the transaction - the majority was when the bank wanted to confirm the identity of the customer as the transaction was higher / more frequent that usual - especially around Christmas time, even banks were cautious.
I did have to retain some cards, and customers were unhappy. Even if they did grab the card and run off, they can't really get far - it's an invalid card and any transaction would decline until they contact the issuer and resolve the issue.
I remember someone saying that if they stuck it in a ATM, it'd eat it and keep it for sending back - does anyone know if that is correct?
Hope that the issue gets sorted, it may just be a simple error which needs correcting.

This is why I don't understand why banks ask retailers to retain a card. If the card is cancelled then it is useless, even the worlds biggest fraudster can't bypass the block placed on the account.
My friends card was eaten by an ATM and it displayed a message asking her to contact her bank. She was severely overdrawn, bouncing cheques left right and centre. So it can definitely happen. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Maybe because as far as an offline terminal is concerned it's a perfectly valid card?
And they don't just have them on trains, my girlfriend's card was imprinted just a couple months ago at B&M Bargains because the magnetic stripe was dying. (Not entirely sure if that was an offline transaction though, as the card number was typed into the system...)0 -

Um, not entirely true. You can get the internet on trains now, there's absolutely no reason for them not having 'online' terminals on them.Conjugating the verb 'to be":

Care to share which train companies accept Visa Electron in their shops?

My local B&M still swipe the card to sign for it. I would have thought it was an online auth in b&m when they typed in the number and just done the imprint to prove the card was present.0
