I reckon like some others that a new card may have been issued with the last week. Perhaps, this may have cancelled the old one. She needs to contact the bank in order to establish what has gone wrong

She only has one card that wages go in, bills come out, so has no way of buying her dinner, filling up with fuel for work etc...

So how did she buy her dinner etc ?

The post is a good reminder of is making sure you are protected if this does happen. Having an alternate card or carrying some cash could one day prove very useful.

Your post would be more credible if you read my post properly.

I didn't say the bank was right. I said
"I don't think anyone reading this thread can really pass comment on Natwest without knowing the full reasons behind their decision to withdraw the card."

Which is true. Unless you have an undeclared interest you cannot possibly say who was in the right or wrong here.

The OP asked for advice. They got factual advice not an opinion.

You see, anyone can selectively quote.

    To reiterate...

    Bah Humbug!

    Doh!
  • I have worked in retail for over six years now and have encountered this before.

As other people have mentioned it will be more than probable the Maestro card provider has sent out a new card (possibly Visa Debit-a lot of my customers have had new cards even though the existing cards had a good while before expiration) and when the card has been processed, it has been flagged up on what is called a "Hot Card List."

Even though your friend answered the details correctly, as the card had been stopped payment wouldn't have been able to be processed.

Voice Authorisation IS embarrassing; I agree-but it's for the safety of you, our customers. Fair enough if you've been aware you've spent a good amount on goods etc, but if your friend's card had been skimmed, she would have, unfortunately, found out the hard way!

The first thing she needs to do is to contact her bank and ask if a replacement card has been issued. If she hasn't received it within a reasonable timescale, then she needs to 'stop' the card and destroy it; otherwise the same thing will happen again...

For anyone else out there whom also reads this: if you ever lose a card and report it before later finding it-you must also notify your bank and make sure you destroy it; don't use it as the same thing will happen above!

The maestro person actually asked her if a new card had been ordered, to which she explained that she had only been given this card in April, so wasn't due one. So even they didn't know! This coupled with the fact that her online banking works a treat and does not flag anything up as suspicious leads me to believe that the bank have cocked up.

I only find this disgraceful that she wasn't givan any explanation as to why this had happened, combined with the fact that they have the people on hand to stop transactions 24/7 but people who can then fix the !!!!-ups only work until 6pm.

She is a young, single woman living in a country over-run by thugs and yobs, so I can imagine a few reasons why she wouldn't carry lumps of cash around with her, she doesn't have credit cards because she likes to manage her money (if she can't afford, she doesn't buy) and only has 1 wage going into 1 account...so really I don't see this as being her fault. How else would you like her to pay for her groceries...? With pebbles...? Maybe Monopoly money...?

I personally believe that a bank should have accurate information and inform a person by any method of communication that there is a problem with an account, to allow them to make other arrangements and also save them the humiliation of looking like a criminal.

As for the kid at the supermarket, after announcing "card declined, I have to retain your card" my friend asked what the reason was, to which he responded "card declined, I have to retain your card". This is what really annoyed her. She asked again which is when he said "I don't know but I have to retain your card".

Then, when he called the bank for her (after refusing a couple of times before, claiming that "he had to retain the card") and the bank asked her to confirm her long card number, she asked to see the card, he refused stating "no, I have to retain the card". She said "I only want to READ the number, just show it to me!" When he once again informed her that HE has to retain the card.

Personally I wouldn't have had that much patience with someone as daft as him, I mean, who puts someone like that behind a 'Customer Service' desk? Some service...

I just think he could have been friendly - "I'm sorry but the card has been declined and the bank have requested I retain the card"

    "But why, what's up...???"

"They didn't say, but you could speak with them if you like".

There are ways of going about things and I don't think that this kid was necessarily helpful in this situation - hense her 'flying off the handle'.

All opinions are welcome guys - but please don't quibble.

    Thank you

How can you say that's daft. The bank had told the retailer to retain the card. It cannot be given or shown to anyone, it can only be cut in half and sent to the bank. Any problem is for the bank to deal with, not the retailer.
  • I had something like this quite recently.

My card was cancelled because of suspected fraud. I'd only done grocery shopping and some light internet shopping on in for quite a while and i always check my online banking and check and there was nothing suspicious at all.

Because i'm at uni i don't like to have too many cards, i don't want to be offered overdrafts cause knowing me i'd probably take it.

I went to bank and asked what was going on, they couldn't do anything for me. Just saying that they could order a new card for me. Apparently they had been trying to contact me and rang my home phone and left a message ( my mum never recieved any message)

One of the annoying things is i got a new card after over a week and it was visa (previously maestro) But i think that was the hidden agenda for giving me a new card.

I had to live off of hand outs from my friends for a week, i hate owing people things
    £11,000 in 2011 = £71.74

It seems we have all got the wrong end of the stick. I thought this had occurred in the UK?
