New VAT Rate charge in december, from sky tv

Options
Sky say they are charging the new VAT rate in December bills. The new rate should only apply to bills raised in January onwards:eek:

Won't it be because you're paying a month in advance for your sky? Would imagine so anyway, think that's the way it works over at VM anyhoo

It may well be that you pay a month in advance but if you are billed before January 1st the old 15% tax applies. Also they would be taking the money in December 2009 so they can only start charging 17.5% in Januarys bill

Not according to Sky - I have been told that December's bill will be dearer because of the VAT increase.

HMRC's official view on what is known as a 'continuous supply of services' is that the supplier can choose to charge at the current or the new VAT rate.

The guidance suggests that where the customer cannot reclaim VAT (ie, us) that the supplier charges 15% rather than the 17.5%.

But then why would Sky do ANYTHING to help its customers?.

Just had a look at my bill, due on 14th Dec - they have charged VAT @ 15% for period 14/12 to 31/12 and then 17.5% for 1st Jan to 13th ie split rate!
