Being a student, I can't get the cashback cards, so this is fine.

Why would they not let students have cashback cards? They still have the same commission from the retailer available to share with their customers.
now have nearly 4000 miles since December 2007 and even though I've not booked a flight or deal yet, the ones I've looked at booking have always been on the dates I wanted.

What destinations are these flights to?

How have you worked out how much airmiles are worth? Do you look at the price of a flight and then see how many airmiles you'd need to take it? different flight times are different prices on the BA site, yet all the same no. of airmiles.

Also you're saying one airmile is "worth" 8p in your first example, but 9p in your second, or am I missing something, or is it just rounding?

I have worked out the value of the airmiles by using Martin's Loyalty Points Checker:

As I'm a student, I only get £500pm, which isn't enough income to be accepted for a cashback card.

The flights I wanted (but couldn't go due to other commitments were): Barcelona, Paris and Iceland.

Egg Money accepted me even though I had almost no income at the time. But then I am older and my whole postcode and indeed village is very highly rated for credit rating and lack of any history of fraud or identity theft. So I think its not as simple as just being a student making you not qualify. The idea of cashback cards is that they don't have to be actively marketed so the cashback (paid for out of the 2% to 2.% paid to the card company by the merchant on all transactions) takes the place of heavy advertising campaigns or gimmicks like Air Miles or Your Points.

I am new to posting on MSE forums and find it all a bit confusing...

I have a 1500 airmiles voucher to use up soon, and want to go away with the husband on Oct 24-25th. the voucher has to include flights and hotel stay. What's the cheapest way to do this? I dont want to 'eat' into my other airmiles, just use the voucher!! any idea what the cheapest place to go at that time of year is?
    Thanks

  • Tanya..I think so long as you choose a country who doesn't use the euro you should be ok. Maybe Prague?

I went to Rome last month using an airmiles voucher - was lovely but very expensive.

Me and my other half have just come back from 5 days in Prague using our 1500 Airmiles vouchers. We also booked 4 nights at Hotel Duo paying £200 and receiving some airmils too (can't remember how many without logging in to airmiles). We too didn't want to eat into our bulk airmiles as we have enough now for one flight to Canada.

We can highly recommend Hotel Duo, we've been there 2 years running. It's about a 15 minute tube ride from the centre but it is a 2 minute walk from the tube station (great if your feet are aching!). There is also a free bus to the big Tesco and shopping centre right outside too!

We had a fantastic time, again!

  • thanks so much socks_uk!!! I want to save my 'bulk/ airmiles for canada too as my sister has just emigrated there. I reckon it'll take me about 5 years for the 4 of us to go on airmiles!!
