AVG uninstalling itself?

Not for the first time recently, I have booted up my PC this morning to a 'not active' security message.
The first time I couldn't even find the AVG software - it had totally disappeared from my PC, so assuming it was some sort of expiry on the free version, I download 9.0.
Today, I can find the software, and after a rather large update that obviously wasn't picked up on yesterdays download, I can get everything to (apparently) work except the shield. The settings tick-box says it's active, but the big red letters (very technical this, lol) say it's not, as does my windows security alert sytem (in fact that still thinks the entire antiviral is off).
What do I trust - and if this is to be a regular issue, can anyone suggest another antiviral option to try.

Hmm, could just be the Windows notifications not reporting correctly - but on the other hand .....
The general opinion is that AVG is not as good as it used to be. Avast, Avira and Kaspersky are all highly rated. Personally I would go with Avast, as Avira doesn't have local email client scanning, and Kaspersky costs.
As usual, it may be work checking it over - scan with MalwareBytes - install, update, full scan, fix and post the log here. Then reboot and use HijackThis - full scan, don't fix anything, just post the log.0 -
yes do an AV check and change AVG out for a reliable free AV program like avast or one of the others recommended around this board0

AVG is very reliable and it would be silly to simply install an alternative, without first checking that the machine is clean!

AVG is very reliable
Plenty of indepent tests (and posts on here) have shown its detection rate has fallen off rapidly of late, and by a very significant margin compared to other leading AV prodicts both free and paid for.
personally I don't consider an AV program that fails to detect significant numbers of viruses as reliable (although if virus detection is not an important consideration for your choice of AV program AVG will be fine) .

Your opinion and "posts on here" of one product compared to another are worthless and is not the issue here, it is your simplistic advice to install an alternative that is unhelpful. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I use AVG, along with Spybot Search and Destroy, and Spyware Blaster. I've had one item slip through the net in 3 years, a homepage hijacker. Therefore, my experience is that AVG is a suitable programme.0

Thank you for your posts.
I've run MalwareBytes - absolutely nothing found - I'll run the other one just in case, but it appears I'm clean right now, so I'll take a look at the options suggested.DFW Nerd no. 884 - Proud to [strike]be dealing with[/strike] have dealt with my debts0 -

That's good - run HijackThis as described, and post the log, which should tell us if there is anything amiss.
Agreed, as remnants of old programs could cause problems with any new anti-virus package that you try to install. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Don't really understand it, but think this is what you wanted.
