It is about 6 years old and up until just re cently was working just fine.
I have followed the advice and washed the blue spongey thing , which sadly ws not blue when I took it out (ugh) , so today I will try and use it again to see if their has been an improvement. Will report back asap0 -
Just try using it for a couple of minutes with the filter out and this will show you if the filter was at fault.0

I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread and offered their advice. I washed the spongey thing and let it dry and have just finished dysoning the living room and can confirm the suction is back to normal. Thanks to everyone , I did not want to shell out for a new one and the advice was excellent.0
