Thats probably true but an engineering grad is not the same as a Chartered Engineer by a long way. To be Chartered you need both the education and the experience. Grads are ok but they need a good bit of development before the become truly useful. I think you will find there is a shortage of experienced engineers in many areas.
What does a council need Chartered Engineers for?

I've no idea, I don't work for a council. It doesn't matter what skills are required though, the public sector needs to pay the market rate to get the right person in especially if specialist skills are needed.

absolutely. we already got at least more than half the MPs than we need. if they got made redundant (and let's face it, no-one is gonna employ a cheating lying MP), they wouldn't even get any benefits cos they are already millionaires. so it would save the country millions. the same goes for all these pointless quangoes and the pen pusher civil servants who do sweet FA all day but still rake in a huge salary.

none of them are goin to cost the taxpayer more when made redundant cos they are already far too loaded and will not qualify for benefits.

Politicians are like nappies - they should be changed often.

    And for the same reason.

I have worked in the Civil Service and Local Authority as well as the private sector. It is my experience that many 'qualified' people are employed in the public sector at the going rate but when the chips are down and decisions have to be made, consultants are brought in. They demand their own price and put forward recommendations. This means that the blame can be laid at their feet if it goes wrong.
If people are being paid to take responsibilty then they should deliver and be answerable.
The use of consultants in PS is rife and could save millions if the practice was stopped.

I think thatmost people will agree with what you've said.

Most consultants are ridiculously overpaid and do a poor job - but then again that's ultimately down to poor management.

Almost invariably, the recommendation includes further study into "the problem" with the support of a highly-paid consultant.

The massive amount of regulation and standards we have created plays into the consultants' hands.

I can hear the conversations now.

Consultant : "What? You don't have 'Investors In People'? How can you know if you are nurturing your 'Human Capital' effectively?"

Then be prepared to receive mails on all sorts of BS59000/2-a part 1's and stuff.
