Call To Cut 1 Milllion Public Sector Jobs

The report linked by the OP was produced by a right-wing think tank, the SOLE remit of which is to protect the interests of the rich. Of course they want to make cut-backs in the NHS - none of them use the NHS, and they're far less likely to be victims of crime, so they don't give a toss about the police either.
That the economy is in a mess now has nothing whatsoever to do with public spending, and everything to do with massive financial mismanagement at a national and international level. We should NOT be paying for this though cuts to services that WE have already paid for!
I notice the private sector is quite happy to receive money from the taxpayer, they just dont like it when taxpayers money goes on providing jobs for the taxpayer.0 -
Well, quite."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured." --Rt. Hon. Tony Benn0

Anyone in particular or the private sector at large. If you're referring to the latter, I work in manufacturing and we ain't had our share yet0 -
Should be - it is long overdue. Most public sector administrative departments are very inefficient and over staffed.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0

Shouldn't think much of that has found it's way to UK business - few car retailers maybe. Kept of few carparts makers going for an extra month or two but most of money I understand has been spent on imports.
Assuming business has benefited by say 25% of the total (say £100mill) that's on a manufacturing base of £250bn - errr 0.4% is that?
Anyway that's a one off - unlike taxpayer money spent on quangocracies which is (or would have been) forever0 -
I just hope cuts happen well way from hospitals that are already completely over-stretched.0

As some people have said before there is definitely a lot of waste of money in the Public Sector. I worked with a girl who had been in the same job for 15 years and was not doing it right! I was told that she would need retrained! In the private sector that just would not have happened. There is a lot of people who take advantage of the great public sector sick rules also and have days off here and there. If allowed I think a great idea would be to make the first 3 days off sick unpaid. I think that would be one area to start cuts!0

Even if this article is well off target, even if only say 300,000 cuts occur, it would still be a substantial cull, and likely dent the rumoured recovery.0

But unfortunately it's going to happen. I suspect that there will be more than 300,000 over the next several years. We simply can't keep spend, spend, spend and hope that something will happen.
Any big project cuts (ie IT, construction, defence etc) will simply lead to a diminution of the private sector meaning fewer wealth creators have to fund a relatively bigger proportion of state employees. Any spare monies should now be focussed on regenerating the private sector (but not banking sector)
The only way to cut public spending is increase taxes and/or cut public jobs and/or welfare spending (ie means testing, reducing benefits, increase retirement age to 72, etc etc)
If Tories have to do it there's no point in slagging them off. Labour shouldn't have been such a profligate government.0
